Lincoln Co., June 11, 1820 where his occupation was that of farming. In 1866, he went to Macoupin Co., Ill. where he made his home till 1873; at this time he came to Nebraska and took up a homestead on Sec. 34, Valley Precinct, Hamilton Co. In 1875, a post office was etablished at his residence named Williamsport, of which he was appointed Postmaster, holding that position ever since and in December 1880, the post office was removed to Hampton. Mr. Hiaett was married in Kentucky in 1843 to Miss Euphana Cogle; both are original members of her Baptist Church, Hamilton, they have a family of five children. Living, Benjamin A., William F., Georginna, Robert W., and Malvani.

From Sacramento County Historical and Biographical records, George W. HIATT: Although practically retired from the active cares of life, George W. HIATT still takes a keen interest in all public affarirs and gives his best efforts toward the advancement and prosperity of Woodland, Yolo county, where he has made his home for so many years. He is a native of Kentucky, was the son of a Virginia emigrant, a farmer of that state. In 1842 he located in Montgomery County, MO and followed farming until his death, which occured at the age of 64 years. He married M. B. Hill, a native of Tennessee, where her father, Samuel HILL located upon his removal from his native state, Virginia. He afterward settled in Lincoln Co., KY where he engaged as a farmer until his death. Mrs. HIATT survived her husband many years, finally locating in Sutter, California, where her death occured at the age of 89 years. Their 8 children are all living, those besides George W. who is the eldest, being as follows: BS., Jackson HIATT, an extensive farmer of Sutter County, Calif, E. Monroe, a farmer and stockman of Mendocino County, California; Martha S., the widow of D. A. SMITH of Sutter County; John F. M., a farmer of Sonoma county; Minerva, the wife of Robert Tharp, of Sutter County; and Mary J., the wife of Captain Beach, of Sutter County.
Until he was 15 yeas old, George W. Hiatt remained in Kentucky, a limited education being received in the subscription Schools, whose sessions were held in the primitive log houses, with rude slab furnishings, common to the early days. After his removal to Missouri in 1842 with his parents he recieved some education in the schools of that state, which was then in even a more primitive condition then Kentucky. But the citizens were made up from the best pioneer elements all the states of the middle west and it was not long before they had introduced a system into their schools which followed throughout the larger portion of the United States. Mr. HIATT remained at home until attaining his majority, when in Montgomery County he united in marriage with Amanda Ledford, a native of Ralls County, MO and daughter of William Ledford who removed from Kentucky to Missouri where he entered and proved land and engaged in the raising of --- and cattle. Mr. HIATT then established a home of his own in MISSOURI, and nine years later, in 1857, followed the westward trend of civilization by locating in California leaving the Missouri river, May 10 and traveling by ox team via the Platte, Green River, Bear River, Humbolt River, Susanville, Butte Creek and thence to Marysville which was reached after three months. Immediately following his arrival he located on Grand Island, Yolo County on what afterwards proved to be the Hager Grant and which he was compelled to give up after 8 years residence. He then moved to Sutter County and in the vicinity of Cranmore he purchased a farm of 1060 acres which he improved and cultivated, putting up a handsome residence; barns and outbuildings. After a period of 5 years he sold out and in 1871 located in Woodland, where he purchased a home. He then entered into partnership with J. B. Teasdale, and purchased land in Sutter county on the Sacramento River where they began raising grain, hogs, sheep, horses, cattle and mules. Later they purchased adjoining land until they owned 2200 acres, which they held in their possession for more then 20 years. In 1892 they dissolved the partnership, Mr. HIATT disposing of his interests to his partner, Mr. Teasdale, who remained on the place. Since that time Mr. HIATT has been retired from the more active cares which had engrossed his attention for so many years and is enjoying a deserved rest.
In addition to giving attention to his farming and stock raising pursuites, Mr. HIATT has been one of the most prominent men of Woodland in municipal affairs and it's upbuilding and progress. He is a Democrat in his polictical convictions and through the influence of this party was elected in 1877 a member of the city board of trustees and later served for two years as president of the same. In 1892 he was again elected a member of the board, serving with Dr. Jackson, Dr. Ross, James Duncan and W. C. Hunt on a non partisan platform, their object being to build a new system of water works for Woodland. This was accomplished by the purchase of the old plant and it's rebuilding and at the same time they put in a new sewer system and erected a city hall building, for the accomplishment of which $130,000 had been voted by the people. To accomplish all their on so small amount of money required a great deal of thought as well as executive ability and at that time the board held an almost continuous session. In addition to improvements won the confidence and respect of the citizens of Woodland while serving in a public capacity. For 4 years from 1889 to 1893 Mr. HIATT served as public administrator.
In August 1902 Mr. HIATT's wife died being then over 70 years of age. Of their 5 children, Mary Elizabeth, deceased was the wife of J. B. Tisdale of Sutter county; William E. is a farmer near Blacks Station; George M. died in MO when 2 and 1/2 years old; Alice is the wife of T. S. Spaulding, a grocer of Woodland, and Laura is the wife of C. E. Byrns, a farmer in the vicinity of Woodland. The two last named were born in Yolo County, California. Mrs. HIATT was a devoted member of the Christian Church for many years. He was listed as a resident in the census report in Montgomery Co.,MO, 1850 (resided next to William R. Ledford, age 40).

B.S.J. Hiatt located in Sutter County, Calif in the ranch which Mr. Hiatt has cultivated and improved for nearly half a century bringing to bear in his work the same application and energy which have always distinguished the
settlers of the middle west, whence he came as an emigrant to the Pacific Coast. He is a native of Lincoln Co., Ky. born Feb 10, 1829. His father, Elijah Hiatt, was also a native of that state where his father had located
upon his emigration from England. Elijah Hiatt engaged as a farmer in his native state until 1836 when he moved to Montgomery County, Mo. and there followed the same occupation until his death. He married Mary B.
Hill, a native of Tennesse who survived her husband and came to California, where in Woodland, she died in the home of her son. Of the eight born of this family, five sons and three daughters, all are now residents of California; G.W. of Woodland, B.S.J. Hiatt of this review, E.M. and John F. in Mendocino., E.M. (Mrs. Thark) of Sutter Co., W.W. Sutter Co., Educated in the common schools of Missouri, where he was at the age of twenty four. In 1857, he outfitted with ox teams and necessary provisions and on the 10th of May left St. Joseph, Mo. for Calif. They arrived at Big Meadows, Calif on the Feather River on the 10th day of September, having made the quickest trip across the plains ever known up to that time. Mr. Hiatt had brought fourteen yoke of oxen across the plains and upon his arrival he sold one wagon and team for $1,000, with which he established a general merchandise business at Shingle Springs, Placer County, having put up a building, adequate for his purpose. He made a success of his undertaking, carrying it on for two and a half years, when he came to the Sacramento River in Yolo County and purchased a squatter's to land located nine miles north to Sutter County and located at Cold Grove Point, where he purshaed seven hundred and thirty fice acres from several settlers and began his original land, until he now owns fourteen hundred, all of which he rents, haing retired from the active cares of life. In 1902 he purshased the steamboat, Nepanset No 2, a trading boat plying between Sacramento and Princeton, with a capacity of one hundred and fifty tons. This boat, in which he now has a half interest, his son P.J. Hiatt having the other half makes a round trip every two weeks. In addition to this, Mr. Hiatt owns a large wheat barge. Mr. Hiatt makes his home in Kirksville, formerly known as Cold Grove Point, in a handsome old residence which he built in 1880. This is presided over by his wife, formerly Sara F. Smith, whom he married in Missouri in 1848. She was a native of Kentucky and located in Missouri with her parents. Mr. Hiatt is a Democrat in his political convictions. One other of these children is Martha, wife of M. Darby, of Sutter County. He was listed as a resident in the census report in Montgomery Co.,MO, 1850 and as a resident in the census report in Sutter Co., CA,1870 (pg. 138) and still was listed as a resident in the census report in Sutter Co., CA, 1880 (dwlng. 93, Vernon TWP).Census, Sutter Co., CA, pp. 138, 139: Benjamin, Sarah, and theirfour eldest children, are listed at the bottom of page 138, at dwelling #126. On page 139, at dwelling #128, May A., John L., and Perry, are listed with Ah Ling, age 19, cook, born in China. Illness may have been the cause of this seperation of the children.

was eleven years of age, he, with his parents, moved to Montgomery County,
Missouri. Here he resided on his father's farm until he was fifteen years of
age, attending the district school during the winters, when his health failed
by reason of an attack of congestive chills. He then attended school until he was twenty-one years of age, when he engaged in teaching until 1854. During this year he crossed the plains with oxteams, arriving in El Dorado County in September of that year, where he was occupied in mining for three years. In 1857 he engaged in merchandising at Shingle Springs, andd floowed this occupation for three years. We next find him in Yolo County loaning money. He remained here int his business until 1867, when he purchased and moved to the ranch where he now resides, at Yorkville, Mendocino County. The ranch consists of one thousand five hundred-sixty acres. He is now engaged in raising hseep, farming, and loaning money. He was married November 17, 1861 to Miss Elizabeth Ledford, a native of Missouri, born July 18, 1847 and by this union they have 8 children.

TRIBUTE TO LATE BELOVED CITIZEN
On Sunday morning at nine minutes past 9 O'clock June 20, E. M. Hiatt breathed his last at his home in Yorkville from an attack of acute Bright's Disease from which he suffered much during a period of 11 days and ending at the hour of his death. The best medical aid was procured and although alleviateing his suffering some it failed the progress of the disease or prolong life.
He is survived by an ever faithful wife, four sons and 6 daughters who, with their families, 38 persons in all, and who were present about his bedside when he died, have the sympathy of the community in their loss and bereavement. The internment took place in Olive Cemetery, Cloverdale, June 22, and was attended by a very large funeral concourse, the town closing up and suspending business in the meantime in respect of the deceased. The pallbearers were Joseph SEDGLEY, M. MENIHAN, John COOLEY, I. S. LEWIS, S. PINSHOWER and B. J. DUNN. The Rev. Messres MOORE and EMORY officiated at teh funeral services and delivered most impressive addresses which were eulogistic of the character and qualities of the deceased. The former is of Fresno, put previously of Ukiah and a presiding elder of the M E S, and teh former is of Cloverdale.
The subject of this sketch was born in Lincoln Co., KY March 4, 1831 and so was 79 years, 3 months and 16 days old at the time of his death. In early youth his parents moved to Montgomery Co., MO, where he attended school until he was 21 years old, and he was engaged as teacher for 2 years and then concluded to make the trip, overland, to California, arriving in El Dorado Co., in September of 1854 and followed mining for 3 years and afterwards merchandising at Shingle Springs until 1860, and later moved to Yolo Co., and remained there until 1867 when he moved to the present HIATT ranch in Yorkville.
He was married to Miss Elizabeth LEDFORD, November 12, 1861 and the issue was 4 sons and 6 daughters adn twenty two grandchildren. The sons are CM, JW, TL and EB HIATT, the daughters are Mrs. Z. P. MILLINGTON, Mrs. R C MELVILLE, Mrs. S. GROSHONG, Mrs. W. I. INGRAM, Mrs. Mercer LAWSON and Mrs. Lelah W. HIATT.
The deceased was an upright citizen, a thorough going businessman in all his dealings, public and private, wedded to system and method in all his transactions. Held many important positions, public and otherwise, in his community, notable superviosr of his district for 2 successive terms, and he and his lovely wife were always strong advocates of school, church and Sunday School, and of their moral, refining and elevating influence, and he will be much missed from his home and from the community in which he lived. He was faithful as a husband, affectionate as a father, and model in all the walks of life, Peace to his ashes. A FRIEND

HIATTS IN RE-UNION; TO PETALUMA '28
Fifty-five members of the Hiatt family gathered at the Citypark in Woodland on Sunday for a reunion and picnic, this being anannual affair of the clan. members were present from Petaluma, SanFrancisco, Live Oak, Yuba City, Marysville, Sacramento, Kirksville,Zamora and Dunnigan. Before they parted yesterday they laid plans forthe next meeting which will be held at Petaluma, the third Sunday inMay of 1928. Last year the event was held at McKinley park inSacramento.
Those who celebrate annually are descendants of V.S. J. (sic)Hiatt, Monroe Hiatt, Minerva Tharp, Will Hiatt and Wash Hiatt, all ofwhom were pioneer settlers of this section, crossing the plains by oxteams and first settling in Yolo county. Later some moved to Suttercounty but most of them returned to Yolo county again.

This obituary appeared probably in a Petaluma newspaper, in December of 1926. Elizabeth died December 9, 1926 and while she died in Sonoma Co., she spent most her life in Mendocino County.LOVED PIONEER WOMAN PASSES
Concious to the last, with a message of love for each of her nine surviving children, Mrs. Elizabeth HIATT, beloved and wonderful patriarchal mother, passed into rest shortly after noon today at the home of her son-in-law and daughter, Mrs. and Mr. Z. P. MILLINGTON, on Keokuk street. For the past three years, Mrs. HIATT's health has been failing but she was not seriously ill until three days ago when she suffered a cerebral hemorrhage which was the cause of her passing. She was the mother of eleven children, nine of whom survive and all the nine were present when the loved mother passed away, to receive her last loving message and blessing.
Mrs. HIATT was a remarkable woman and up to her final illness was extremely youthful for her advanced age, retaining her mental faculties and physical strenght, often making the trip between here and her Yorkville home, unaccompanied. For the past three months she had been here at the MILLINGTON home always enjoying her visits here with her relatives, including her grandchildren and great grandchildren.
Mrs. HIATT was a native of MO, and on July 18th last celebrated her 79th anniversary. She came to this country 69 years ago at the age of 10 years, and her people settled first in Sacramento Valley where they resided for six years, then went to Yorkville, Mendocino County a short distance above Cloverdale, where she has resided ever since or for over sixty years.
She made frequent trips to visit relatives and had countless warm friends here who loved the noble woman for her many high ideals, her Christian spirit and her loving manner.
She was devoted to her people and was idolized by them and all were proud of the pioneer mother and grandmother. She was for many years a devout member of the Methodist Church, south. Mrs. HIATT was the widow of the late Elijah (Monroe) HIATT who passed away many years ago.
Mrs. HIATT is survived by the following 9 children: John of Oakland, Bowlin of Cloverdale, Lee of Hopland, Mrs. Z. P. MILLINGTON of Petaluma, Mrs. R. C. MELVILLE of Cloverdale; Mrs. Irvin INGRAM of Cloverdale; Mrs. Mercer LAWSON of Pt. Arena and Mrs. Sid GROSHONG of Eureka. (California)
She also leaves many grandchildren, including Mrs. L. INGERSON and Mrs. William HELION of Petaluma and Mrs. LOGAN of Alameda County and many great grandchildren, and she was extremely proud of all of them.
Her death was like her life, beautiful. A more fruitful, splendid life could not be imagined then that of this rugged, loveable, kindly pioneer, who diffused sunshine in her path and who lived a true Christian life, with the Golden Rule as her guide.
Her silent form reposes at the parlors of John C. MOUNT. The funeral will take place on Saturday, leaving the parlors at noon and services will be held at the Methodist Chruch, south, of Cloverdale at 2:30 PM Internment will be in the family plot at the Cloverdale Cemetery where she will be laid to rest near the graves of her loved ones who have gone before. Passing of Pioneer Woman of Sutter City - Funeral Thursday Morning
At the advanced age of eighty-three years and a life full ofcharitable deeds and kind neighborly acts, Mrs. Martha Susan Smith passed away at her home in Sutter City last Wednesday morning. She has been in poor health for some time and her demise was not unexpected.
Mrs. Smith was one of the pioneers having come to Californiafrom Kentucky, her native State, in 1857. She resided in Yolo andLake counties before locating in Sutter county. She leaves one son,J. W. Smith of West Sutter, two sisters, Mrs. R. W. Tharp of Sutter City and Mrs. Mary Beach of Los Angleles, also a brother, William H.Hiatt of Cloverdale, Sonoma county, and the following grandchildren: Mattie Lemon, Virgil, Edward, and Kirby Smith, Valetta Lay, Georgia,Robert, Arthur and Esther Smith, all of Sutter county; Johnnie, Willieand Mamie Binkley of Mendocino county; Homer Owen Cox of mendocino county, and Mrs. Florence Murfey of Sonoma county, besides nine great-grandchildren.
The funeral was held from the Christian Church in Sutter Cityon Thursday moneing at 11 o'clock and attended by many old friends andneighbors. Interment was made in the Meridian Cemetary.
