Amer was a Brandywine Hundred farmer and a member of Joseph Marshall's Militia Company during the Revolution. He married Ann Buckley and they had seven children. They were active at St. Martin's Church. Amer built a two-story fieldstone house in 1783 that has survived and is now a retreat house of the Holy Rosary Church. In 1805 he was one of the five charter school trustees that built the first public school in the area; the Old Stone School was later used as Claymont's Library, until 1960, and is still preserved as a historic site.
