February 15, 1934MRS. MARY GOERNER AGED 80 YEARS DIES MONDAY, FEBR. 12
Death came to another of the older citizens of Fayette County lastMonday, February 12, when Mrs. Mary Heller Goerner joined the everincreasing majority. The funeral was held Tuesday afternoon at 3:00o’clock, from the home of Louis Heller, and interment was has at theFlorida Chapel cemetery, near Round Top, Rev. R. Heise of La Grange,officiating.In attendance to pay their last respects were friends of the deceasedof many years, and the friends and relatives of the family. At thehour of her death, Mrs. Goerner had reached the age of 80 years, 1month and 21 days.
Mrs. Heller Goerner was a daughter of Francis Heller and CarolineHeller, nee Hillman, who emigrated to America in the year 1852. Mrs.Goerner was born December 22, 1853, on the present site of the Hellerfarm, just one year after her parents had removed from BiegelSettlement to the present farm. She was the second of six childrenborn to Mr. and Mrs. Heller, the other children are Fredericka, anolder sister, three younger brothers, Louis, Johann and Tom; (Johanndied in his second year) and one younger sister, Elizabeth.
Mrs. Goerner was united in marriage with Ed Goerner in the year 1875,and from this union there was born one daughter, Julia. The Goernerslived for a short time near Warrenton, later they removed to theHeller farm. She is survived by her daughter Julia, the wife ofWalter Meiners, five grandchildren, Elvis, Delphine, Annette, Edna andJohn Meiners; two brothers, Louis, who lives on the Heller farm andTom of Millett, Texas, and one half-brother William Heller of Canyon,Texas, the only survivor of tow half-brothers and one half-sister, thechildren of Francis Heller’s first marriage.

I. Biographical Note
Missions professor, Foreign Mission Board executive, author, andpastor, Dr. Hentry Cornell Goerner was one of Southern Baptists´ mostinfluential authorities on worldwide missions and evangelism duringthe twentieth century. A native of Mart, Texas, he was born on August5, 1908, as the third of six children to Henry L. and Cornelia(Leonard) Goerner. While Goerner´s father and siblings wereMethodists, his mother was Baptist, and through her influence, Goerneraccepted Christ at age 12 and joined the Cliff Temple Baptist Churchin Dallas.
Goerner remained in Dallas for his undergraduate education, receivinga bachelor´s degree from Southern Methodist University in 1929. Heattended classes briefly at Yale University before eventuallytransferring and earning the Th.M. degree from Southern BaptistTheological Seminary in 1932. In 1935, Goerner received the Ph.D.degree from Southern.
Upon his graduation, Goerner accepted a teaching position in thedepartment of comparative religion and missions at Southern where heremained until 1957 when he moved to Richmond, Virginia, to become theForeign Mission Board´s Area Secretary for Baptist Missions in Africa,Europe, and the Near East. As the work of the FMB expanded andGoerner´s department split, he maintained responsibility for Africa,and later - following another growth related split - for West Africa.Goerner retired from the Board in 1977.
Goerner´s accomplishments extended beyond missions education andadministration. He authored six books including America Must BeChristian and Thus It Is Written, the latter of which has beentranslated into seven different languages. He was inducted into theLiberian Royal Order of the Friends of Africa and was an avidphotographer.
During his days as missions professor at SBTS, Goerner served asassistant pastor, then pastor, of Crescent Hill Baptist Church(1935-1940) and as interim pastor of Parkland and Beaver Dam BaptistChurches, all in Louisville. After retiring from the FMB, he served asinterim pastor of several Richmond churches, and then as pastor ofElon Baptist Church in Hanover County, Virginia, for over 11 years.
Goerner married Ruth Vinall Paddock in 1932. The Goerner´s had threedaughters, Georgia Cornelia, Esta May (``Mitzi´´), and Margorie Ruth.Dr. Henry Cornell Goerner died at age 90 in Richmond, on October 2,1998.
