Raymond E. Tuning, 80, a Kamiah resident, died Thursday of congestive heart failure at Clearwater Health and Rehabilitation Center at Orofino. He was born May 3, 1914, to John and Martha Pressnall Tuning at Allen, Nebraska. He lived at Allen and Norden, Nebraska for eight years until moving to Greenleaf, Idaho At Greenleaf he attended the Greenleaf Friends Academy, graduating in 1934. Before his marriage he worked in road construction and seasonal jobs.
He married Violet Gehrke, May 20, 1939, at Wenatchee. The couple lived in various places in Washington and southern Idaho before moving to Woodland, Idaho, in September 1946. They lived and farmed at Woodland until 1969, when they moved to Kamiah.
He was an active member of Pine Ridge Baptist Church at Kamiah. He also enjoyed leading Bible studies. He also enjoyed helping his sons with their field work and making and repairing decorative windmills.
He is survived by his wife at their Kamiah home; three sons, Jim and Steve of Woodland and Ernie of Orofino; two brothers Theo of Boise and Evert of McMinnville, Oregon; two sisters Ollie Piersall of Caldwell and Bethel Cronrath of Nampa; and numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren. A daughter, Dorothy Grove, three brothers and two sisters died previously.
Visitation will be Tuesday from 4 to 7 pm at Trenary Funeral Home at Kooskia. The funeral will be at 10 am Wednesday at the funeral home. Burial will immediately follow at the Woodland Cemetery with dinner following at the Woodland Friends Church.

Find A Grave Memorial# 60052989Violet Ione Tuning, 76, a long time Woodland and Kamiah resident, died of cancer Sunday at Life Care Center in Lewiston.
She and her husband, Raymond Tuning, moved to Woodland in 1946 and farmed there until 1969, when they moved to Kamiah.
She was born March 25, 1922, in Chelan, Washington, to Emil and Veva Pressnall Gehrke. She married Tuning May 30, 1939, in Wenatchee and they lived in various places in Washington and southern Idaho before moving to Woodland. Her husband died April 27, 1995. She was an active member of the Pine Ridge Baptist Church in Kamiah. She enjoyed attending Bible study and senior citizens activities. Her hobbies included making footstools and quilting.
Survivors include three sons, James and Steve both of Kamiah, and Ernest of Orofino; two sisters, Alene [Babe] Van De Mark of Wenatchee and Elsie [Shine] Thoren of Mansfield, Washington; 12 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a daughter, Dorothy Grove; a sister Ivie; and brothers Lauren and Eugene Gehrke.
Her funeral will be held at 11 am Thursday at Woodland Friends Church with the Rev. Jack Azbill of
Lewiston officiating. The family suggests memorials be contributions to the Kamiah ambulance fund or the Pine Ridge Baptist church building fund. Trenary Funeral Home in Kooskia is in charge of arrangements.

Find A Grave Memorial# 17010923Phoebe Mary (Marie) Pressnall Hirst, 93 of Hayden Lake, formerly of Greenleaf, died Tuesday October 4, 1994, at her home of natural causes. Graveside services will be held at 10 a.m. Monday, October 10, 1994, at the Greenleaf Cemetery. Memorial services will be held at 10:30 a.m. at the Greenleaf Friends Church. Services are under the direction of Dakan Funeral Chapel, Caldwell.
Mrs. Hirst, or Grandma 'Re as she was know to so many, was born November 24, 1900, in Allen, Nebraska, the daughter of Milton Otto and Evalina Tuning Pressnall, the third of five children. In 1904 the Pressnall family left Allen, Nebraska for Wenatchee, Washington, going up the Columbia River by boat to Entiat where they purchased a homestead. In 1918, the Pressnall family returned to Nebraska and worked in the Nebraska Central College while their children attended school. In 1919 they moved to Greenleaf, Idaho to farm.
Marie married Edwin Claude Hirst of Denver, Colorado, March 7, 1919 at the Nebraska Central College. Homer J. Coppock, retiring college president, performed the ceremony and the new couple then joined the Pressnall family in Idaho.
Mrs. Hirst enjoyed participating in the Greenleaf Quilting Club and making quilts for the Greenleaf Friends Academy auction, for the church and for missionaries and other Christian causes.
Surviving is a sister, Orpha Cammack of Salem, Oregon; two daughters, Iverna Hibbs of Greenleaf and Willa Piersall and her husband, Wayne, of Hayden Lake, seven grandchildren, 20 great-grandchildren. 7 great-great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband, two sisters, Lulu Pressnall, Veva Gehrke, a son-in-law, Leland Hibbs, and a brother, Wilbur Pressnall.
Her family requests that memorials be made to the Greenleaf Friends Academy.

In the 1910 census for Loon Lake, Washingotn Emil A Gehrke was the age of 23 making him born in 1887.

There seems to be a great deal of confusion about Emil Gehrke's birth year.1900 Census shows b. Feb 1888 (Age 13)

Note: Brother Otto was born Jan 1884!1920 Census shows age 35 (abt 1885)
1922 Canadian Immigration form shows age 36 (abt 1886)
1979 Social Security and Washington Death Index show 1884 as birth year.
My conclusion is that 1884 is probably a date Emil chose for unknown reasons. A brother couldn't have been born just 1 month before he was, and census records completed while he was still in his parents' home show 1888.
