William JOHNSTON OF THAT ILK


“WILLIAM JOHNSTON, eldest son of Alexander married MARGARET MELDRUM, he was killed at the fatal battle of Flodden (dying in a royal manner) in which he accompanied King James IV in 1513.”

“Fyvie, the greatest barron for the tyme in the North pairt of SCT.  This gentlewoman buire to William on son, called Jeames...Gilbert, who ‘was provydit to nithing because his father was slain ‘at Flodden when with King James IV on his expedition to ENG.”


Alexander DE JOHNSTON

Died in the reign of King James II of Scotland.


ALEXANDER de JOHNSTON, in the reign of King James II got his lands which till then had been held of the earl of Mar, erected into a free barony, to be called the barony of Johnston in all time coming; and from thence this family were designed Johnston's of that ilk, was married to AGNES GLASTER.

Stephen’s great-great-grandson, Alexander, born in 1434, collected the rapidly growing family lands into the free barony of Caskieben, and the family for 200 years was known as the Johnstons of Caskieben. That area now is part of greater Aberdeen called Dyce. The family also had cadet branches (lines from younger sons) based at Crimond and Craig.

Died in the reign of King James II of Scotland.  In the reign of James II got his lands of Caskieben, which were formerly held in the Earls of Marr as superiors, erected into a free barony.
