“John Johnston of That lik”

George, by his wife, the Honorable Christian Forbes, daughter of William, seventh Lord Forbes, a very numerous family and it was, in all likelihood, in order to provide for his younger brothers and sisters, that in 1595, John Johnston disposed of the property which had so long belonged to his ancestors."

"George and Christian Forbes Johnson's eldest son, Jon Johnson was the eldest brother of Dr. Arthur Johnston. John was the last of the great lords of that Ilk and of Caskieben, he ruled his domain from 1593 until 1613, discharging the duties of his station in a manner fully accordant with the supposition of his having, when in early manhood, acted the part of a father to the 12 younger brothers and sisters who were left under his guardianship, and of his own 11 children. Younger brothers, Arthur and William Johnston were sent to the new marischal College. These two boys, deprived of their father's care when the elder was but in his sixth year, owned the upbringing which prepared them for the eminence which they attained, to their brother, John, who was already in his majority when Arthur was born.

“Had by his second wife (Katherine) 2 sons and 2 daughters - Thomas of Craig. . . etc.”??

The family titles and lands, however, descended to the eldest son John Johnston (1565-February 1814), who married first Janet Turing of Foveran, another community in Aberdeenshire. Their son Sir George lost much of the family lands including the castle at Caskieben (now known as Keith Hall), but he gained a royal grant for extensive properties in colonial Nova Scotia, became baronet of Nova Scotia in 1626 and sheriff of Aberdeen in 1630.

Sir George Johnston, son of John, was making efforts to attain high rank for his family while his landed estates were on the point of departing from the name for ever. He drew his last rent apparently in 1633, and the whole of his property fell, by adset (mortgage) into the hands of Alexander Jaffray, this included many lands and towns. (Sir George Johnston, m. Elizabeth Forbes, 1615 succeeded to property, age 21, 1618 Mortgaged all property, 1621 Defaulted on mortgage of Newplace to brother John, 1625 Knight Baronet Nova Scotia, 1626 arrested for vandalism and arson, 1633 Defaulted mortgage and lost all property.)

Katherine LUNDY Lundie/Lundin/

1573?  1597?

It is by this alliance that all the existing branches of the family of “Lundie [latin for Lundy] of that Ilk” was descended of the royal family of that kingdom through Robert, the son of “William The Lion”, [which verbal tradition in this country has often corrupted into “William the Conqueror”] and  brother of King Alexander the Second; who having married the daughter and heiress designed himself Robert de Lundie; in consequence of this descent the family of Lundie were, by a special permission of King Charles the Second, anno 1679, autorized to carry the royal arms of Scotland on their shield. [R.R.Stodard in his Scottish Arms, 1370-1678, states: “The head of the Lundins sat in parliament 1488, and Walter and his son, William, from 1560 till 1590.  Robert de Loundonius is repeatedly called, in crown charter, “filius” by King William, and “frater” be Alexander II].  The following entry occurs in the Index of Retours.  It is the service of the Lady of Johnston’s [Katherine Lundie’s] brother, as heir to their father: “Mali 6 1600, Joannes Lundy”.,..heeres, ‘Magistri Gulielmi Lundy de Eodem, patris, “in the lands of Lundy, etc., in the county of Fife.

George JOHNSTON

1592?  ?1590

Sir George Johnston (1544-1592) ascended as a child to the family titles and properties and married Christian Forbes. His father had been killed at the Battle of Pinkie in September 1547, and Queen Elizabeth granted George his charter the following year at age 4. George and Christian had at least 13 children who came of age as the English were colonizing Virginia. A close Johnston relative of the family moved to London and became deputy treasurer of the Virginia Company, who recruited settlers for the colony -- which may account for the migration of several Johnston families in the 1600s.
