Herbert Standing says:  “John Elmore, a white man, married An-Nah-Wah-Kah, a full blood Cherokee from the Holston River in North Carolina, (now Tennessee) whose mother’s name was Weh-Hah.  Nothing is known of her father...For some reason not known to us, John Elmore and his wife did not seem to want their daughters, and at least two of them were raised by Quaker families of the eastern part of Virginia near Richmond.  Their daughter, Martha Elmore, was raised by David Johnson and wife, Mary (Woody) Johnson, and Martha took their last name as her own.. . . .Martha Elmore married Hezekiah Sanders and their family is recorded in Deep River Friends Meeting records.  Deep River Friends Meeting is located in Guilford County, NC  Another account:  A story told by Aunt Molly Coppock at an evening campfire of those from Bush River on the way to the Northwest Territory.  She stated that her grandmother was a Cherokee Indian of her story:  ‘For over seventy year there wan an Indian village on Bush River not far above the little Friends settlement.  There was a great deal of bitterness between the Indians and the white men, and border warfare between them was frequent.  One night a company of soldiers, together with some settlers who had volunteered, fell upon the Indian village and killed every man, woman, and child, save only two - a little boy and girl, about 5 and 6 yrs. old, who escaped and the next morning were found by my great-grandfather.  They were hungry and crying, and he took them to his home.  Later he adopted them.  His own son fell in love with the girl and they were married.  That girl was my grandmother Sanders. . .Written by Wilson S. Doan.”
