1840 Census: Augusta County, VA1850 Census: Bath County, Virginia - John’s sister, Elizabeth Jarvis, 41, and James Jarvis, 10, were with this family in this Census.
Appears family moved before Civil War.
Some say there was a name change during the Civil war. It was pronounced as Tuning and rather than say different many just took the name Tuning. We have been told the original spelling was CHOWNING and pronounced as CHEWNING.
Sources for children: 1850 Census for Bath Co. Va. and 1880 Census Jefferson Co. Iowa. Rnd Pr. Twp. House #73.
There is a deed dated the 14th day of November 1855 between John Chewning and Elizabeth C. his wife. This was signed by John Chewning and his wife Elizabeth C. Tuning.
1856 Iowa Census: Van Buren , Lee County, Iowa - name listed as Tuninge - time in Iowa “0”
1860 VanBuren Co., Iowa Census, shows Caroline and 5 children. Sarah and Demja not there. Sarah married John McDorman (Quaker records.) Demja could be Dorcus too.
Also living with John is an Elizabeth Jarvis same age as John so could be his twin sister and could also be why John’s wife is listed as Caroline.
Elizabeth Tuning married a Jeremiah Jarvis and has one child (James age 10) with her.

Notes for ELIZABETH CAROLINE BALDWIN:
Elizabeth Caroline Tuning is named in the will of Clementious Swearingen. This we assumed was her father, tho it never said anything about her being a daughter. There were other wills with Lucy Jacks in them, and she was a daughter, and it never defined that either. We have received other information that her maiden name was Baldwin. This comes from a marriage license of her daughter Ellen Hoskins and also it is in the Bible that belonged to (Carolines son) James Tuning and his daughter Daisy Tuning Benstead had that bible, her Grandson Wilmer Benstead has it in his possession now. We think that Peter Baldwin and Sarah (Johns) Baldwin may be her parents but have not gotten the proof on this yet. Jerri is still working on this. If this is true then that may well be why she is named in Clementious Swearingen's will. She would have been a neice of his wife, Mary (Polly) Johns.
After they moved to Iowa and John died -- she remarried 3 more times.
