S/o John Boone and Dorcas Chestnut.
Driver was married a 2nd time and had 6 children. His 2nd wife name was Mrs. Elizabeth Cooper Gause Boone.
Driver Boone was Spiceland's second postmaster serving from July 16, 1842 until Feb 14, 1853. At monthly meeting time he would sort out the mail of persons likely to be at meeting, carry this mail to church in the top of his tall Quaker hat, and after services go around and distribute the mail.
Driver Boone was a cobbler in Spiceland. His shop stood on North Cherry St., near its intersection with Elm Street. His home is still standing today (1985). It was the first house east of Brook Bezor on the north side of West
Main St.Sent May 1990 by Richard Ratcliff.
It is believed that the following was written in 1914 by Dorcas A. Harvey for the 9th Boone Reunion. My memory goes back vividly to my childhood and my earliest memory is associated with my beloved grandfather, Driver Boone.
Visits to Spiceland from my fathers home were one of the outstanding events of my early years. The distance was about 7 miles and the time generally Saturday afternoon. With the privilege of staying over the Sabath. That allowed us the chance to attend Spiceland Meeting and seeing many friends. All of us who knew him will remember him, as I do, our grandfather at work. He was a shoemaker, and always busy. My mind holds him exactly as he was in those years, seated at his bench, bent over his task. It did not matter how busy he was, he always had a word of cheerful greeting for anyone who came to him. The cutting of the leather and the driving of the wooden pegs would interest we children by the hour.
Now I have in mind two or three items that others may have forgotten or overlooked. Our grandfather, when he first came from North Caroline, brought some cotton, and for some years he raised that product in his garden each season. He was not able to bring his small crop to maturity, but did advance it until we were allowed to see the forming cotton ball and see it just bursting with it's wealth of white.
The second Item is that for years he raised in that wonderful garden a good supply of peanuts. And such peanuts as no one of you younger relatives ever dreamed of. When we were planning our trips to Spiceland, one of the particuliar treats we had in prospect was to get some of grandfather Boone's home grown peanuts.
I want to mention two other examples of things different now from what was the usual thing when our grandparents were at the helm.
I have in my possession at my home in Colorado, a vest of our great grandfather Boone. This vest was made of what is generally known as jeans. It is all a home product. I much regret I failed to bring it with me. I promise next time I am here you will see it.
Now another item of more than unusual interest, I have a piece of your grandmother Boone's wedding dress. Now that would not be of any special importance as matters go in general, but let me tell you of this dress in particuliar. The dress is entirely homemade. That expression will not be understood as we use it nowdays. Now it would simply mean that the coming bride had gone to the store and bought the cloth. Not so with your grandmother. She went to the ground for the material. For she raised the cotton and the flax and then worked up the raw material into cloth. She than made her dress and was married at the age of 16 years old.
