Jonathan Jr. HIETT

    HIETT CEM., Hampshire Co., WVA
Jonathan Hiett, born Sep 10, 1822, died Mar 7, 1907.

Sent by Wilmer Kerns.
According to courthouse death record, Jonathan died of old age.  Dr. E.B.Martin reported his death to the Hampshire County Clerk.  (Note: These dates should be checked agaist other sources.)
Capon Valley 1698 to 1949 by Maud Pugh stated that his parents were Jonathan and Hannah (Harrison) Hiett, and that Jonathan, Jr. died March 27, 1902.  Jonathan's tombstone appears to give 1907 as the death year.
Mr. and Mrs. Hiett spent lives at the paternal Jonathan Hiett farm on North River, were members of the Christian Church in which they took great interest, driving many miles to attend church conventions and other church functions.  Their house was the minister's home and many prominent divines have been entertained under their roof.  They loved Christ and His church.  Among those great speakers who visited them were the Rhodes Brothers, J.A. and I.J. Spencer, and J.D.  Haymaker.  Their children were all brought up in the faith.  Jonathan and Mary lived to be old and went home in triumphant Christian faith in a happy future existance.  They were one in deed and thought, and when Mrs. Hiett felt she was nearing the end she requested to have her grave dug as near as possible to that of her husband, which was done.

                 HIETT CEMETERY, Hampshire Co., WVA
Located on the Hobart Hiett Place, Hoy Road, turn right to Joe Butlers.  Information supplied by Ins Kline of Pleasant Dale, WVA.
Jeremial Hiett, died Oct 9, 1893, aged 67 yrs 1 mos 1 day.

Sent by Wilmer Kerns.  Found in Early Births Western Fredrick Co., Va. and Eastern Hampshire Co., West Va. complied by Grace Kelso Garner and Ralph L. Triplett 1976

Jeremiah was an excellent rafts-man, who knew how to guide large rafts of timber downstream, on North River.

Capon Valley 1698 to 1940 by Maud Pugh.   Jeremiah better known as "Jerry", son of Jonathan and Hannah Harrison Hiett, born on North River and died there October 9, 1893, age 65 yrs 11 months and 1 day was a successful farmer of the Seventies and Eighties.  In early life he was a daring and fearless raftsman.  That was during the years of transportation of virgin timber to market from Hampshire county by means of plank, or log, rafts on the streams.

North River, with its big bends and sudden curves between cliffs and rocky shores, its eddies, its rapids and its many mill dams, was a dangerous route.  Only a stout heart would brace it. A stream must be swollen past fording, but not yet out of banks, to attempt rafting.

Mr. Hiett was small of stature, blonde, active, quiet and dignified.  He married Emily Jane Burkett of near Three Churches, Hampshire Co., who died Feb 21, 1896 aged 67 years, 5 months, and 3 daya.  They lived on a farm north of and adjoining his father.
