Drury Smith married second wife Elenor "Nellie" Grogan in 1797 in StokesCo., NC. He had been a soldier in the Revolutionary War at GuilfordCourthouse. He bought land in 1780 on Paw Paw Creek in Guilford, laterbecoming Rockingham Co., NC He later purchased additional land, was adutiful citizen, serving on juries, Road Committees, and witnessing landtransactions. He served in the State Legislature circa 1800. Upon hisdeath in 1822, he had acquired over 1474 acres of land, all of which wasdivided among the sons at his death.
Drury Smith was said to have lived in the vicinity of Christian ViewChristian Church. A marker was placed in Christian View Christian churchcemetery for Drury's service in the Revolutionary War. In the name of God amen. I Drury SMITH of Rockingham County and state of North Carolina being well stricken in years and at times ailing and atother times in common health for a person of age and at this time inright mind and memory calling to mind the mortality of my body andknowing that it is appointed to all men once to die do make and ordainthis my last will and testament - that is to say principally and first ofall I commend my soul to the given and bountiful sustainer of all goodand my body I recommend to the earth to be buried in Christian order atthe discretion of my surviving friends and Executors and as touching suchworldly property as it has pleased the Lord to help me with I am willing and I wish to dispose of it in the following manner & form Item I give and bequeath unto my son Frank SMITH onehundred acres of land a survey deeded whereon he now lives being thelower part of my plantation (to wit) beginning at a stump close his millthence north sixty seven poles up the creek thence east 240 poles to NUN Sold line also seventy five Acres more being part of a tract of land Ibought from Ingram NUN of one hundred and fifty acres including that Tract that James READ [?] now lives upon.Item I give and bequeath to my son Daniel SMITH two hundred acres ofland beginning at Frank's corner and thence along his line east to theline called nuns old line and including seventy five acres the remainingpart of the tract which I had surveyed joining Bartholemew GROGANS thence north as far as the the line called Ingram's line extend [?] then west to Paw Paw Creek thence down said creek to where my old fence was thence east crossing little paw paw and then down said creek to Frank's line.
Item I give and bequeath to my two sons Johnson [?] SMITH and DrurySMITH two hundred and thirty Acres of land the same I bought of Peter and George HUNTER to be equally divided between them. Item I give and bequeath to my son Richard SMITH full priviledge of twohundred aces of land where ___ I now live that is so far as I wish him tolive with my beloved wife Eleanor SMITH which to her I bequeath said two hundred acres of Land for the whole of her life also I lend unto her aNegro man named Peter and desire him to be used for her support through her whole life & at her decease to be sold and the money divided equally among my sixteen children after being sold to the highest bidder at public sale and after her decease I give and bequeath the aforesaid two hundred acres of land It being my home tract containing my farm and plantation where on I now live and have for many years and I also give to my wife and deposit in my son Richard SMITH's care a bed and furniture and chest which if she lives and dies with him to be his property then and I also give to my son Richard to be his at all times a sorrel marecolt also a cow and calf & a feather bed and furniture and after my beloved wife's decease my son Richard SMITH to have full possession of my two hundred acres of land as aforesaid also I give and bequeath to my wife through life a bay mare and cold wishing these my desires to bearfull effect I ___ anul [?] all others but this to be my last will andtestament and for proper proceeding here to I constitute and appoint my trusty friend Josiah CLAYBROOK to be my soul executor also my two sons Frank SMITH and Daniel SMITH my trusty sons to be executors there with nothing doubting but they will see my intentions herein mentioned take effect so wishing the lord may bless the world with temporal

Know ye, That we, forand in consideration of the sum of fifty shillings for every hundred acres hereby granted, paid into our Treasury by Drury SMITH, have givenand granted, and by these presents, do give and grant unto the said Drury SMITH, a tract of land containing one hundred andforty six acres lying and being in the county of Rockingham, on the headwaters of Pappaw Creek. Beginning at his own corner black oak in MAYBERRYs old line, thence his line North one hundred and sixteen poles crossing two branches to a sourwood, thence the same East thirty threepoles to a black oak, North one hundred and fifteen poles crossing abranch to pointers in Zacha. SMITHs decd. line, thence that line East onehundred and thirty three poles crossing the fork of a Branch to a whiteoak in KELLAMs line, thence his line South eighteen poles to RUSSELL Scorner Chesnut, thence RUSSELLs line West fifty four poles to a blackoak, South two hundred and thirteen poles runing by the corner to a grubin said SMITHs own line, thence his own line West one hundred and twelvepoles to the first Station.
As by the plat hereunto annexed doth appear, together with all woods,waters, mines, minerals, Hereditaments, and appurtenances to the said Land belonging or appertaining: To Hold to the said Drury SMITH his heirs and assigns forever yielding and paying to us such sums of money,yearly or otherwise, as our General assembly from time to time maydirect: provided always, That the said Grantee shall cause this Grant tobe registered in the Registers office of our said County of Rockingham,within twelve months from the date hereof, otherwise the same shall bevoid.
In Testimony whereof, we have caused these our letters to be madepatent, and our Great seal to be thereunto affixed. Witness, James TURNER, Esquire, our Governor, Captain General, and Commander in Chief ,at Raleigh the 29th day of November in the Twenty ninth year of our Independence, and in the year of our Lord one thousand eight hundred and four.
