PLAC Lawsonville,Stokes,North Carolina
Dad grew up very poor during the depression era. His parents were farmers and share croppers in rural North Carolina. He grduated high school at 17 and immediately joined the U.S. Navy, serving during the last year of WWII detatched to the Marine Corps. as a medic. He attended B.Y.U.with assistance from the V.A. Bill, where he met mom. Soon after graduating with a chemistry degree and going to work at Dugway Proving Ground ( a U.S. Army chemical and biological weapon facility), he was recalled into the Navy during the Korean War. He served at the Alemeda Naval Hospital as a hospital corpman, awaiting an officer's commission. The commission finally came through just as the war ended, and was turned down as dad would be making more money working as a civil service research chemist at Dugway Army Proving Grounds. He later worked for Hercules in the Salt Lake valley in Utah, from where he eventually retired. He was a bee keeper for many years, and also grew beautiful roses and kept a large vegatable garden and an orchard. He also taught us to love and revere the earth and the animals that share it with us. He taught us how to shoot, hunt and fish, and how to take care of ourselve in the wilds. He loved the children and I remember how his face would light up with pure joy when he held babies.
He was the first in his family to earn a collage degree and move out west to Utah. His father, two sisters and a brother subsequently moved to Utah as well.
Dad was my hero and was greatly loved by his family.
We miss you, Pops.
