The obituary of James S. Hiett indicates that he was born in Hampshire Co., West Virginia. Jan 31, 1821, and died Jan 23, 1901 York, York Co., Neb. He was married to Susanna King, march 17, 1846 with whom he lived until death, nearly 55 years. To this union were born 12 children, 7 sons and 5 daughters. Two sons and one daughter preceded him to the home beyound. In 1868 he moved from West Virginia to the state of Illinois. In the fall of 1877 he moved to York Co., Neb. where he engaged in farming. In the spring of 1898 he moved to the city of York where he lived until he was called home.
It is believed that enough of the statistics and family names in the obituary coincide with the record of William Perry Johnson in indicate that James Sanford Hiett was our ancestor.
James S. Hiett was converted to Christianity in the days of his youth, at the congregation then known as Timber Ridge in Hampshire Co., W.Vir. Seven sons and five daughters were born to James and Susan Hiett.
All of the children were members of the Christian Church, but all were not in full sympathy with that church.
James Hiett like the apostle of old, was determined to know nothing (among men) but Christ and him crucified. He was a great lover of Elder Benjamin Frnaklin. When he became conscious that the end was near, he called all of his children to him and bade them a long and last farewell. He then requested his children to sing the words he used to sing and delight in:
How sweet the name of Jesus sounds
In a believer's ear.
It soothes his sorrows, heals his wounds,
And drives away his fears.
