The Washington County marriage records: Vol I pp. 263 - Volney ADAMS m. 24 Mar
1831 Mary MILLER by S. BLUE, M. G. both of Watertown - which is just east of
Palmer Township. The Township lines were changed in that area at least twice, in any case this shows the approximate spot, and part of the county. I am very familiar with the name MELLOR in the Palmer area from very early times, so no doubt the Court record is incorrect. There are other intermarriages of MELLORS with our families.

NAME: Possibly named after Constantin Francois Chasseboeuf Boisgirais VOLNEY Count de, French author, born in Craon, Maine-et-Loire, 3 February, 1757; died in Paris, 25 April, 1820. He was the son of Francois Chasseboeuf, a barrister of Craon, and was known until the age of twenty-five by the name of Boisgirais, but in 1782 he adopted that of Volney. In 1795 he came to the United States with the intention of settling in this country, and was welcomed by George Washington. He visited Pennsylvania, Virginia, Kentucky, and Louisiana, engaged in a controversy with John Adams concerning the latter's work on the constitution of the United States, and afterward answered Dr. Joseph Priestley, who had attacked Volney's infidel theories. Volney's letter was published in English (Philadelphia, 1797). While in this country Volney predicted, day after day, the operations of Bonaparte's campaign in Italy, pointing out the places where the Austrians were to be defeated. This astonished every one, while many looked on Volney as a French general in disguise. Washington asked Volney for an explanation and he replied: "In 1792 I met at Marseilles and in Corsica a young lieutenant of artillery, and, being much struck by his conversation, invited him to my house. I was soon satisfied that he was a man of extraordinary genius .... The conversation fell on the war. Bonaparte developed a whole plan of operations to be pursued either in Italy or in Germany. I took down his words, and he now follows the plan of campaign that he explained to me years before." Volney showed his notes to Washington, who became also convinced of the great future of the new commander.

Constantin François de Chassebœuf, comte de Volney (3 February 1757 - 25 April 1820) was a French philosopher, historian, orientalist, and politician. He was at first surnamed Boisgirais after his father's estate, but afterwards assumed the name of Volney (which he had created as a contraction of Voltaire and Ferney).

He was born at Craon (Mayenne) of a noble family. Initially interested in Law and Medicine, he went on to study Classical languages, and his Mémoire sur la Chronologie d’Hérodote (on Herodotus) rose to the attention of the Académie des Inscriptions and of the group around Claude Adrien Helvétius. Soon after, Volnay befriended Pierre Jean George Cabanis, the Marquis de Condorcet, the Baron d'Holbach, and Benjamin Franklin.

He embarked on his journey to the East in late 1782 and reached Ottoman Egypt were he spent nearly seven months. Thereafter, he lived for nearly two years in Greater Syria in what is today Lebanon and Israel/Palestine in order to learn Arabic. He returned to France in 1785 where he spent the following two years compiling his notes and writing his Voyage en Egypte et en Syrie, which was published in 1787, and Considérations sur la guerre des Turcs et de la Russie in 1788.

He was a member both of the Estates-General and of the National Constituent Assembly after the outbreak of the French Revolution. In 1791 appeared Les Ruines, ou méditations sur les révolutions des empires, an essay on the philosophy of history, containing a vision which predicts the final union of all religions by the recognition of the common truth underlying them all.

Volney tried to put his politico-economic theories into practice in Corsica, where in 1792 he bought an estate and made an attempt to cultivate colonial produce. Chassebœuf de Volney was thrown into prison during the Jacobin Club triumph, but escaped the guillotine; he was some time professor of history at the newly founded École Normale.

In 1795 he undertook a journey to the United States, where he was accused (1797) by John Adams' administration of being a French spy sent to prepare for the reoccupation of Louisiana by France. Consequently, he was forced to return to France in 1798. The results of his travels took form in his Tableau du climat et du sol des Etats-Unis (1803).

He was not a partisan of Napoleon Bonaparte, but, being a moderate Liberal, was impressed into service by the First French Empire, and Napoleon made him a count and put him into the senate. After the Bourbon Restoration he was made a Peer of France, upon recognition of his hostility towards the Empire. Chassebœuf became a member of the Académie française in 1795.

I just found Volney’s death date. He died May 23, 1895 in San Bernardino County, CA He was 90 years1 month and 7 days old. Married at the time of his death. He was born in Vermont. I found this at the San Bernardino County Pre-1905 California Death Index Book 2 (A-B). I believe you had 1894 for the year.

In your ebook you have Volney Adams born 1804 as marrying a third time. It says he married his third wife in 1854, 2 years after he married his second wife. The problem is that on the 1870 census Samantha the 2nd wife is still alive and living with Volney. I do think who ever gave you the information of Volney having a 3rd wife is wrong. Also Samantha is alive and with Volney on the 1880 census. Volney died in 1895 at the age of 90, so check out this information. It can NOT be right.
