William S CANTER

Volunteered at Manassas, VA. 23 Jul 1861.  He was promoted to Sargeant 5 Feb 1863.  Taken prisoner at Petersburg, VA, 2 Apr 1865, he wa a POW at Old Capitol Prison at Washington, DC and was sent to Johnson's Island, OH 11 Apr 1865.. He took the oath oa Allegiance 18 Jun 1865 and was released.   Description:  florid complexion, dark hair, hazel eyes, 5' 8" tall.


Valentine HOLYFIELD

Volunteered 10 Aug 1861 at Dobson when he was 44 in a local group orgainezed by David M Cooper and Lacy J Norman.  He was taken prisoner  8 Feb 1862.  he received a discharge because of overage and he was not a conscript 10 Dec 1862.


Lewis HUNTER

Joined CSA with his brother jeremiah 16 Oct 1863.


Elizabeth JESSUP

+   32 viii. Elizabeth Jessup (1238) Elizabeth (1238) was born circa 1839.  She married William Shepard 'Shep' Jessup (1239) 23 Jan 1864 in Surry Co., N.C.


    32.  Elizabeth3 Jessup (1238) (Nancy2 Smith, Bartlett1).  Elizabeth (1238) was born circa 1839 in Stokes Co., N.C.  She married William Shepard 'Shep' Jessup (1239) 23 Jan 1864 in Surry Co., N.C.  Elizabeth (1238) died circa 1872.  Burial was in the Albion Baptist Church Cemetery.
    Children of Elizabeth3 Jessup (1238) and William Shepard 'Shep' Jessup (1239) all born in Stokes Co., N.C, were as follows:
+   124 i. Ira Ellis4 Jessup (2987) Ira (2987) was born 29 Jul 1865.  He married Mali Taylor (3057) 7 Dec 1890 in Stokes Co., N.C.
125 ii. George Washington Jessup (2988).  George (2988) was born 15 Jan 1867.  George (2988) died after 1942 in Mt. Airy, Surry Co., N.C.
126 iii. Jackson Lee Jessup (2989).  Jackson (2989) was born 5 Apr 1870.  Jackson (2989) died 7 Jul 1930 in Mt. Airy, Surry Co., N.C., at age 60.  His body was interred in Oakdale Cem., Mt. Airy, N.C.

James Ransome KEY

Entered service 18 Mar 1862.....Two months later he was killed at Hanover Court House, VA, 17 May 1862.  His brother, Martin, was killed the same day in the same battle.

Samuel Chafan KEY

Entered service 4 May 1861..

Entered service 4 May 1861..to 7 Feb. 1865 was part of Co. A, 28th Reg. NC Troops. Called the "The Surry Regulators".  Samuel fought in the Civil War with all 3 of his brothers and fought next to his brothers, Martin V and James Ransome when they were both killed on the same day in the Battle at Hanover Court House, VA, 27 May 1862  His third brother Andrew Jackson, was drafted at the age of 17 on 12 Oct. 1864.  Samuel was present and accounted for until 7 Feb. 1864 when he was reported AWOL.
