Land records of Maryland show a William Kirkman receiving 150 acres June 1 1686. A William kirkman appears in the Maryland census of 1776. A widower with four young children and a few slaves. A farmer...Description: 5' 3" tall, light complexion, brown hair....volunteered for service 27 Mar 1862 at Flat Shoal in Surry and mustered in 30 Apr 1862 at Camp Mangum, Raleigh, NC. He was sick in Jan=Feb of 1863 and was sent to a Goldsboro Hospital, was sick again 8 Apr 1863. At some point, dat not given, he was captured and was a POW at Point Lookout, MD..Released 28 Jun 1865.
