William Jr. KIRKMAN

Historians trace  the Kirkmans back to England.  At Oxford the Kirkmans were among the friends and helpers of John and Charles Wesley in the early Methodist Church.   Land records of Maryland show a William Kirkman receiving 150 acres June 1 1686.  A William kirkman appears in the Maryland census of 1776.  A widower with four young children and a few slaves.  Was a tenant farmer in the Hollow springs District in 1860....

Andrew Virgil KIRKMAN

A farmer...Description:  5' 3" tall, light complexion, brown hair....volunteered for service 27 Mar 1862 at Flat Shoal in Surry and mustered in 30 Apr 1862 at Camp Mangum, Raleigh, NC.  He was sick in Jan=Feb of 1863 and was sent to a Goldsboro Hospital, was sick again 8 Apr 1863.  At some point, dat not given, he was captured and was a POW at Point Lookout, MD..Released 28 Jun 1865.
