Richard "Dick" SNOW

Was a farmer of Pine Ridge..Made famous by book "Fisher River Scenes"... Had 5 sons in Civil War..James S. and Tommy Tucker Snow were twins...Tom lost the sight of one eye; Frost and Bird were both officers and both were killed in action,  and Abner Snow, the youngest son, also served


Frost SNOW

Volunteered at Surry 20 May 1861 when he was 20 with his brother, Byrd.  He made Third Lt. 16 Jun 18622 and suffered a wound at Chancellorsvile, VA, 3 May 1863 and died of those wounds 5 Jun 1863 in a Richmond hospital. the words "He was in fourteen battles" was written on his record...His brother, Abner, who was in the same company packed the body of Frost in sawdust and brought him home by wagon for burial at home.

James S (twin) SNOW

Was a constable in the Dobson district.....He volunteered at Dobson 4 May 1861 when he was 34...He entered service as a Corporal and made Third Lt. 9 Apr 1862.  He resigned 15 Jun 1862 because he was ovesr 35 and his family needed him.  James left active service 20 Aug 1862.  The Conscript Law was passed in Apr 1862 and it fell to the Home guard to see that conscriptees went into the military service.  James became a Captain in the Surry Home Guard and served until the war was over.
