Nancy Ellen Ballenger's parents came to Fremont CO., Iowa from Grant Co.,
Ind when Nancy was 2.
Listed in the 1895 Census in Thurman, IowaMothers Funeral Obituary
Mrs. Nancy Ellen Hiatt was born Oct 9, 1856 in "Grant County, Ind." and came to
this county with her parents, John Ballinger and wife two years later. Was
married to Charles Hiatt, March 2, 1879. Nine Children were born of their
union three sons and six daughters, six of whom two boys and four girls survive
the absent mother. At the ageof fourteen she became a member of the Baptist
church, remaining in same until three years since, when she joined the
Methodist three being no church of her denomination in Thurman, where she
remained to the time of her death. August 31st after an illness of 22 months
from the dread consumption, her suffering were ended and a father and children
were left with out a mothers presence.
The funeral took place from the ME. church, the services being conducted by
Elder George Weaver who officiated at her wedding. The procession of more than
one half mile in length, attested to the worth in which she was esteemed by her
neighbors and the community. The pall bears were T.M. Ambler, E.L. Warner,
Wallace Hall, Wallace Forney, J.E. Dayson, B.J. Adamson.
Friends were kind and attentive in every possible way both to the
lingering sufferer before her death, and to the family after for which they ask
us to express their earnest appreciation.

The town of Austin served as county seat until it was moved to Sidney in
1851. Austin was located about two miles north of the present town of Hamburg. Leland had the birth date as 20 Sept. 1880.
