He was taken prisoner somewhere around Chancellorsville 3 May 1863. In a letter to his father he states: "I went from the battlefield to hookers Headquarters and from there to Washington and then to Baltimore, from there to Wilmington, DEL. then to Philadellphia and then to Fort Delaware." He was then sent to City Point, VA, for exchange 23 May 1863. He was in the Eastern North Carolina Campaign in the spring of 1864 before he was killed 6 Jun 1864 at Cold Harbour, VA
