James was living with his parents during the 1850 Surry Co. TN census. A few dwellings away is the Harrison family.
James and Eliza probably married 1851/1852 in Surry Co. NC and were probably in TN by 1853 where their first child was born. James is 14 years older than Eliza. I have not found a record of their marriage in NC or in TN.
1860 Overton County, TN census, Mouth of Wolf PO has James M. age 41 a farmer with real estate valued at $2000 and personal property of $1000, Elizabeth is 37. Both were born in NC. Margarett is 8, John is 6 and Martha is 4. All children were born in TN. Living in the next dwelling is a W.D.W. Patterson and family. His age is 27 and birth place is NC. Also living in adjacent dwellings are lots of Mainards. (Elizabeth's age is 27 not 37.)
The 1870 Overton Co. TN census Wolf Branch PO taken July 21 has James M Patterson age 52 a farmer with $2,000 of real estate and $600 of personal property, Eliza W is 36. Both were born in NC. Margarett A is 17, John L is 16, Martha J is 14, Harrison P is 10 and Wiley F is 3. (page 338 of census)
The 1880 Clay Co. TN census of the 9th district EDN. 13 page 286,1-2 of June, Volume 4 sheet 2 line 1 (dwelling 8/family 8) lists the Patterson family, James is 60, a farmer born in North Caroline and gives his parents place of birth as North Carolina. Eliza W is 47. Her relationship to the head of household is as wife. She keeps house and was born in North Carolina as were both of her parents. Petway H is 18 son of James and is a laborer. Ann E is 15 and daughter of James living at home. Wily F is age 13 and son of James. Emma H is 7 and daughter of head of household. All children indicate that they were born in Tennessee and that their parents were born in North Carolina. James and Eliza's two oldest children Margaret and John and their families were living in the next two dwellings/families.
James died in 1886 and is buried as is Eliza in the Mount Pisgah Cemetery, Masonic Hall at Fairview Section near Willow Grove in Clay Co. TN. The majority of the other names in this cemetery are Maxfield, Sidwell, Daniel, Fletcher. His birth and death date are from cemetery records.
Eliza is living with her parents in the 1850 Surry Co. NC census. Her family lives near the Patterson family.
From the 1860 Overton Co. TN census living a few dwellings away from Eliza and James Patterson is a Henry A. Harrison age 25, Susan is 20, Bascom is 3 and Martin is 7 months. Henry, Susan and Bascom were born in NC. Martin in TN. They would have come to TN then between 1857 and 1859. Census was taken in June.
Eliza W Patterson is mentioned in the will of her father probated May 1887 in Surry Co. NC.
1900 Clay Co. TN census has Eliza Patterson head of household, age 67 born in January of 1833 and a widow. She was born in NC as were both of her parents. Her occupation is farming and she owns her property. She can read, write and speak English. Farm Schedule is 62. Her daughter Annie and her husband John Daniels are living with her. Nearby is her son John Patterson and his family.
Eliza is not listed with her daughter's family in the 1910 census. According to Patterson research by Mattie Hogan Hicks Wiley never married. Wily F Patterson was listed in the 1880 Clay Co. Tn. census as 13. This would put his year of birth at about 1867. A copy of a photograph sent to me by Inis Dennis Watson is of Wyley Patterson.
Louella as a child of James and Eliza comes from the the research of Mattie Hogan Hicks. I cannot find her listed in any census records.
