FUNERAL FOR FRANK UNDERWOOD -
Frank M. Underwood was born in
Clay county, April 23, 1872, and died
at his home in this city near twelve
o’clock Monday night of this week,
following an illness of two weeks of
pneumonia. Funeral services were
held at the First Methodist church,
Wednesday at 2 o’clock, conducted by
the Rev. Earle Cravens, the pastor.
Interment was in the Piggott cemetery
The passing of Mr. Underwood
takes from this city a man. who was
strong in his convictions, and which
at all times he intended to be for the
best interests of his community. If
one differed from him he granted
that person the same privilege he as-
summed himself and did not fall out
with him nor make him an enemy.
During his early life he learned the
carpentry trade and it is said he was
one oft he best woodworking men in this
section of the state. During his later
years he had not been actively en-
gauged in carpenter work.
Mr. Underwood served this city as
mayor a number of times, and was
justice of the peace of ‘St. Francis
township for several terms. When
the formation of land blocks for an
oil test was started near Piggott Mr.
Underwood was named trustee of the
leases, and served until taken serious-
]y ill. At his suggestion the trustee-
ship was assigned to ex-sherlff Jack
Wailain. A test well is now being
drilled on his land two miles north-
west of Piggott. He believed that this
section would at some time be one
of the greatest oil fields in the Unit-
ed States and his influence carried a
heavy weight in closing the present
block. He contracted the cold which
developed pneumonia while watching
the progress of the drilling of the well
known as Underwood No. 1.
The deceased was united In marriage,
May 15, 1900, to Miss Lallah
Simpson, daughter of the late Dr.
W. B. Simpson. Surviving are his
widow, and one daughter, Mrs. Willa
Wyatt of Wilmington, California,
two grandsons and a large number
of relatives. His daughter arrived at
his bedside a week before his death.
