Elizabeth Manerva (Nervie) UNDERWOOD
I am saving this note to your file.
This is your great gg grand daughters husband.
I think his notes are of value and he is a man of honor.Sir,
I began doing genealogy research when I was fourteen years old. I
am thirty four now. My Surname is the one that I have almost have had
the least success. There several reasons for this. A local, now long
deceased, historian stated that the Hodge family made their living by
stealing from other people's smokehouses. If you knew the different
clans of Hodge's in the Sale Creek, Tennessee you would say this is a
true statement. Me and two of my cousins are the first in our lines to
go to and graduate college. We do live to a ripe old age (my
grandfather turned 86 today) and tough (he had a quintuple heart bypass
on Tuesday).
We have been in the Sale Creek, Tennessee area since at least
1824. I think prior to this the area was Indian Territory but I will
have to confirm this. Here is the information that I have on the
earliest.1830 Census, Tennessee Hamilton County John Hodge 10001-00001

Rawlings, Clk JS. Yarnell, reg.Now I go back over this and some BIG red flags go up for me. John
was allegedly Jefferson's father. According to family legend John came
from McMinnville area because he had killed a man and he came here to
get away from the law. I need to find out if McMinnville was a town
then. In the deed book he said that he was from Monroe County. I will
follow that lead. If I remember correctly, the question mark was put in
the book by the clerk (the book I got it out of was one of those copied
from the microfilm or original book but I forget which). I need to do
some more verifying.
This Jefferson Hodge is the culprit for all the various clans in
Sale Creek today. He had at least four wives that I can be sure of in
his life time. He would have one and she would have a bunch of kids and
then she would die then he would get him another young one.
Unfortunately, I don't think he bred up very much. Some of the Hodge's
are missing a few limbs on the family tree. Murder, thievery,
bootlegging, and womanizing are some of the skeletons in the family
closet (ok, the bootlegging and womanizing is in my line but I don't
claim the rest).
When Kathy's father found out I was a Hodge he took her up through
a portion of Sale Creek called "Hodgetown" and said, "Look, see who
these people are. Do you want to marry into something like this?" We
met in college. Fortunately, the portion of the Hodge's he showed her
were the "other side of the family" a few generations removed. After
Bervin got to know me and realized that my family tree had a few limbs
on it and that I had a few brain cells to fire simultaneously he
relaxed.
I guess I will start digging around more on the Hodge side of the
family. Monroe County is ten minutes from where I live now. I am a War
Between the States historian and can answer any questions you may have
on Civil War stuff.Respectfully Your Obedient Servant,
Gerald D. Hodge, Jr.
