Christopher LEWIS

I just found your Rootsweb World Connect Project site that you updated a couple days ago (11-03-07). Perhaps you could help me. I have been trying for several years to place the connection between my Jane (UNK maiden name) Mooring - my mother was a Mooring - and Christopher Lewis. I do have a copy of his will. First, let me give you some info that I have picked up along the way:  1.) John and Jane Mooring's son was named for Christopher Lewis and was one of the 4 godchildren of Christopher Lewis. Christopher Mooring was listed as a godchild in the will of Christopher Lewis.  2.) John Mooring was transported to VA by Thomas Greenwood prior to 23 Feb 1652. He first appeared on the VA list of tithables in 1668, and son Christopher first appeared in 1683 so we can place Christopher M.'s birth at ca 1666/67, and Jane probably was bornca 1640's.  3.) Surry County Court Records 1673: Charles Becket made deposition that he saw Mr. Jno. Lewis deliver a still to Mrs. Mooring, also dishes, etc., and he said whether he lived or dyed she should hsve it, etc. (NOTE: Charles Becket also was named in the will of Christopher Lewis.)  4.) On Genforum 19 Dec 2003, Mr. Richard Wicker placed this query: "Most genealogists list the wife of Christopher Lewis , b. 1581 d. 1673, as Ann Exton. Yet, a wife Jane is listed twice in Surry County land records in 16761-62. His daughter was born ca 1645-50, VA. If her mother was Ann Exton, b.1596, then Ann was elderly for a birth of that time frame. Can anyone help me out with Christopher Lewis and his wife/wives?" (NOTE: I had wondered if Rebecca were the daughter or Granddaughter due to Ann's age.)  5.) Your Rootsweb site I just found showing a second wife for Christopher with Rebecca apparently being her child.  Let me digress a minute. I am an avid puzzle person, and logic problems are my favorite. I also have been doing family history almost 25 years.I have let my logic puzzle mind-set help me, along with other aids such as timelines, etc.,while working on other lines in my family; and 99% of the time when the final clue is found, I have been right.  Now, what my logic tells me: Christopher Lewis, b. 1581, m/1 Ann Exton ca1681, qand probably had children we have no records of. After Ann's death, he married Jane UNK ca 1647. Probably had a daughter named Jane (who married John Mooring) after her mother and then other children including Rebecca. Using a time frame for the known death date of Christopher Lewis and the deposition of Charles Becket, it would seem most likely that John Lewis was a son of Christopher and delivering the still, dishes, etc. from Christopher (pre-or-post death) to "Mrs. Mooring". This is very strong evidence that Jane Mooring had a close relationship to the Lewis family, as these types of items were almost always passed down to the children in the family.  Do you have other info on Christopher or his children? Please pick this apart and let me know what you think about it.  Alice Faye Dodson Martinez
