                                Jesse GASS
   Jesse Gass was born around 1805 in Barren Co., KY.  He died arouind 1865 in Jackson Co., (now Clay Co.) He was married twice.  In the 1850 Census of Jackson Co., TN, he was listed with his first wife, Sarah, who was born around 1805 in TN.  Her surname is unknown.  They had the following children: Richard, born 1830; William C., born 1832; Rachel, born 1834; Andrew J., born 1836, Nathan J., born 1837; John H., born 1839; James B., born 1841; Jesse Newton, born 1843; and Josiah S., born 1846.  Jesse was married the second time to Louvina White, born in 1821, the daughter of Peter and Ann (Morey) White.  Jesse and Lavina had the following children:  Peter Harvey, born January 9, 1858; Francis M., born 1863; and Rhoda M. born 1865.
    Francis M. Gass, born in 1860, was the first postmaster at the Post office in Moss, Tennessee.  He was appointed to this position January 15, 1883 at the age of 23.

    Peter Harvey Gass was born January 9, 1858, died August 24, 1946.  He was a farmer.  He kept honey bees and sold honey.  He married Rebecca Savage, the daughter of Preston Leslie and Nancy (Hestand) Savage.  Her third great grandfather was Henry Heistand from Zurich, Switzerland.  After about three generations, they changed the spelling from Heistand to Hestand.  Peter Harvey and Rebecca had four children, Ona, Bethel, Vestas, and Herman, born October 3, 1900.  Ona Gass married Frank Condra.  Ora was bitten by a mad dog around 1912.  Her uncle, Banyon Savage, took her in a buggy to Bowling Green, KY to a mad stone.  The stone drew the poison from her wound and she lived to be 92 years old.
   Bethel Gass married Dovie Reneau.  Bethel served in WWI.
   Vestas Gass marreid Edna Pennington.
   In 1922, Herman Gass, who as born October 3, 1900, and died June 23, 1986, married Beulah Copas, who was born April 20, 1907 in Clay Co..  She was the daughter of John and Hettie (Cherry) Copass.  Herman was a carpenter and a farmer.  He was teh owner of a sawmill, a grocery store and a restaurant.  He sold his sawmill and went into logging buisness.  Herman and Beulah were members of Moss Church of Christ.  They had five children, Chester, John Harvey, Creola, Randell, and Shelvie.
    Chester Gass married Pauline Cherry.  John Harvey Gass married Erma Lee McLerran.  They have three children, Patricia Darlene, Deborah Kay, and Michael Kevin.  Creaola Gass married Billie Davis.  They have one daughter, Pamela Ann, who married Greg Pedigo, and they have one daughter, Amy Lynn.  Randell Gass married Juanita Rush.  They have one son, Ryan Neal.  Shelvie Gass married Wilma Collins and they have two sons, Christopher Sean and Shannon Wesley.

N.Y. by Otis M. Gass, who in turn sent it to us.

             A Reminiscent History of the Ozark Region
                          pp. 90 - 91

   John H. Gass.  This gentleman is one of the most prominent farmers of Boone County, Ark., and there is no one who more fully illustrates in his career the unbounded energy and activity of the agriculturist of his section than does he.  His birth occured in what is Clay Co., Tenn., in 1839, and he received very little schooling, much of his time being spent in the arduous duties of the farm.  On Feb. 1, 1858, he was married to Miss Susan J., dau. of Lewis and Abigail Pipkin, natives of South Carolina and East Tenn. respectively.  Mrs. Gass was born in Tennessee and was four years old when her mother died, and sixteen when her father passed away.  By her marriage, she became the mother of ten children, as follows:  Sarah A., wife of James E. Rand, of Fulton Co., Ark. Lusetta F. deceased, was the wife of William Niblett; Clemency E., wife of William Porter, of Boone Co., Ark.; William N.,  Lewis S., Jesse H. (Deceased), Robert F. and Otis M.  When the Tocsin of war sounded in 1861, Mr. Gass enlisted in Company B, Ninth Kentucky Infantry, Union Army, and was with Gen. Rosencranse in several prominent engagements.  Perryville, Murfreesboro, etc., and was discharged in 1863, after two years service, for disability.  After this he made his home in Tennessee until 1872, when he moved to Indiana and from there to Fulton County, Ark.  One year later he moved to Baxter Co., Ark., and made his home there for three years, afterwhich he resided the same length of time in Fulton County.  From there he moved to Boone County and for about ten years has lived on his present farm of 187 acres, about 50 acres under cultivation and well improved.
    Mr. Gass has been postmaster of Burlington Postoffice since February, 1891, and has been justice of the peace for about eight years.  He is a member of Omaha Lodge, A. F. & A. M., and he and Mrs. Gass are worthy members of the old Christian Church, Politically he formerly affiliated with the Democratic Party, but since the war he has been an ardent Republican.  His first presidential vote was cast for Breckenridge in 1860.
    Mr. Gass is a son of Jesse and Sarah Bray Gass, natives of the Keystone State, (Penn.), and both born in the year 1804.  When quite small they moved with their parents to Tennessee, married there and passed the remainder of their days, the mother dying about 1853, and the father about 1867.  They were members of the Disciple Church.  Farming was the father's occupation in life, and he was justice of the peace for eight years.  Our subject's maternal grandfather, Richard Bray, died in Monroe County, Ky., when John H. was a boy.  He was an early settler of Tennessee.  Of the eleven children born to his parents, our subject was the seventh in order of birth. Thomas during the war); Rachel died in Illinois; Catherine J., died in Tennessee; James B., died in Indiana; Jesse Newton, died in Indiana (he was with Gen. Thomas during the war); and Josiah, died in Tennessee. The father of these children was twice married, his second wife being a Miss White. She bore him six children, as follows: Anna Jane, died in infancy; Peter Harvey, of Tennessee; Francis M., of Kentucky; Sarah Ann, of Tennessee; Melvina, of Tennessee, and Rhoda, also of that state."

"Enrolled 24 Sep 1861, Monroe Co. Ky. for 3 yrs. Private @ Camp Boyle, Ky, Co. B 9th Reg. of Ky. Inf. Vol. Described himself as 5'10", fair, blue, dark, farmer. Discharged @ Nashville Tenn 24 Aug 1863 by Surgeon's Certificate of Disability - chronic diarrhea."
