John H. Gass.  Richard is noted to have died in Texas before the writing of the story concerning John H. Gass.

William Condra GASS

William C. Gass died at Nashville, (He was a soldier in the Union army with
Gen. Rosencrans, and died from the effects of a wound received at Murfreesboro).From Civil War records: Pvt. Co. B 9th KY Vol. from Jackson Co. Tenn. in Capt Silas Clark Co. Gass gave age 30, 5'10", fair, blue, light hair, married, a farmer - pay @ death $46.78. Wounded in neck 30 Dec 1862, died 3 Feb 1863. In service from 26 Nov 1861 until death 3 Feb 1863. (b. 15 Sep 1830) No further information about a wife or children.

Civil War, died from wounds from war.


Nathan Jasper GASS

Sent by Marilyn Martin, this information sent her by Otis M. Gass.  The
source is "A reminiscent History of the Ozark Region", pp. 90 - 91.  Died in
Indiana, he was with Gen. Thomas during the Civil War.  From Civil War records: Enrolled 20 Aug 1862 at Orange Co., Ind. in Co. H 93rd Reg of Ind Vol. Mustered into service as Sergeant 1st on 20 Aug 1862 to 19 Jul 1865. Gass described himself as age 41, 6'0", fair, blue, dark. At the seige of Vicksburg captured 10 Jun 1864 on retreat from Brices Crossroads in Mississippi. Survived the disaster of the steamer Sultana on Miss. river on 27 April 1865 - remained until Jan 1865 with "surgeon's certificate of diability" - "comsumption". Was never able to regain health.
