ONE HUNDRED AND NINTH ILLINOIS INFANTRY

Of one Illinois regiment we have an inglorious record to make.
We would gladly omit it, but the truth of history compels it, and it will at least serve to illustrate the wonderful strength of treason in our own midst, and by contrast aid to illumine  the record of the men who did their duty.  The 109th regiment was organized at Anna, Union County, and mustered into service on the 17th of September, 1862.  It was freely charged, and generally believed, that the regiment was composed almost exclusively of members of the knights of the Golden Circle. The following special order from the War Department tells as much of it's history as it is Necessary for us to follow:
                                         "Lake Providence, Louisiana,}
                                                 "April 10,1863      }

         "Special  Order No. 6 ]
" The officers of the 109th regiment Illinois Volunteers, Except those of Company B,  having been reported as utterly incompetent to perform the duties of their respective commissions, and evincing no disposition to improve themselves, Are hereby discharged from the service of the United States.
"This is the regiment which was within a few miles of Holly Springs when attacked by the rebels, failed to March to the support of their comrades, but drew in their pickets, and stood ready to surrender..From nine companies, 347 men  deserted, principally at Memphis, and but one from Company B.  To render the men efficient, it is Necessary to transfer them to a disciplined regiment, and they Are accordingly transferred to the 11th regiment Illinois Volunteers, Company B to make up the tenth company.
     " The officers thus discharged Are;
" Colonel, A.D. Nim ma; Major, P.M. Perrine;  1st Lieutenant, Cubbison, Regimental Quartermaster.
" Captains- B.C. Crutcher, Samuel B. McClure, Hugh Andrews, D.A. Lewis.
" 1st Lieutenants-- James B. McLane, Jacob Milligan, Ballantine, Abraham Merlene, Morgan Stokes, Charles Barringer, Josiah Toler, Bernardino
" 2nd Lieutenants-- M.C. Godman, TTY Robinson, Charles Kettles, Squire Crabtree, Henry Gassaway, Andrew Calvin.
" Chaplain P.M. Crouch will, as the regiment has been consolidated, be mustered out of the service.
"Surgeon P.M. Perrine, Assistant Surgeons John B. Henly and George B. Dewey, will be assigned by Major-General Grant to other Illinois regiments to fill vacancies.
" By order of the Secretary of War,
       "(Signed) Stomas, Adjutant - general.
       "Adjutant General's Office,
       "Washington, April 24, 1863,
             " Official

Mary Elizabeth LEDBETTER

In 1838, the Federal Government forced most Cherokees west into what is now Oklahoma. The Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians trace their descendant from about 1,000 Cherokees who managed to elude this forced removal. About 300 of these claimed US citizenship; the rest were living in Tennessee and North Carolina towns or hiding in the mountains.

Could this be why they left Haywood Co NC?????

Anna JOHNSON

                          In Memoriam
                          Ann  Creamer          October 11, 1895
As a shock of corn ripe and redy for the harvest, so was Grandmother Creamer who so peacefully departed this life Friday morning 5 o'clock, October 11, 1895.

Anne Creamer, daughter of Thomas J. and Mary F. Johnson, was born October 28, 1812, near Paintsville, Green Co., OH; one brother and one sister still survive her.

In 1830 she moved to Springfield, IL, and while there on November 13, 1833, was married to Willam Gatlin, then went to home in Tennessee.  By this union one son, Joseph, was born, who resides in Defiance County.   In 1834 she returned to Greene Co., OH, and resided at Jamestown until her marraigte with Sieon Creamer on July 25, 1844.  One son and three daughters were born tothem, two of which are still living.

She was born and raised in the Friends Church.  After her marriage to Creamer, she united with the M.E. Church and was amember of that church until death.  In the sick room shse found no superior, ever kind and attentive.

She has been confined to her room about three months, taking sick at her son  Simeon's.  In the last days of her illness many times she was heard in praise of her desire above all was that her children and loved ones meet her in Heaven.

When the Death Angel called she peacefully folder her arms and fell asleep.  Funeral at the home of E. H. Peele, Sunday, Octover 13th, 1 pm, conducted by Rev. ALpheus Trueblood, of Jamestown and Rev. Winkler, of Bowersville, Ohio.

Marriage Notes for William Gatlin and Anna JOHNSON-344311

Burritt Hiatt chart gives her death place as Greene County, Ohio

Joseph GATLIN

Anne was married to William Gatlin in Springfield, IL and afterwards went to home in Tennessee.  Joseph was born there and resided at time of his mothers death, in Defiance Co.  In 1834 she returned to Greene Co., OH and resided at Jamestown until she married Simeon Creamer.

Elisha Thomas BRYANT

In 1850,Elisha Bryant was living with his wife Nancy and their children in Rockingham County, North Carolina.  Sometime shortly afterward, Elisha left his family.  By 1860, he was living in Floyd County, Virginia with a 33 year old woman named Mary and their children Sarah, age 5; Nancy, age 3; Rachel, age 2; and a seven month old baby named Frances.  They went on to have several more children, Celia, Delilah, Jackson, Manda, Lizena, and Hannah.   They were still living together at the time of the 1880 census, but by early 1881, Elisha had been declared a lunatic and was under the care of Hardin P. Hylton, who was appointed his "committee". (just a note, it was common in those days, even into mid 1900's, that a person suffering a stroke was treated as a lunatic and some at least, put into an asylum. Larry Anderson)

In 1882, a petition was granted for the sale of Elisha's real estate in order to pay for his care. An advertisement  in the newspaper "Floyd Reporter" names Elisha's children, both by his wife Nancy and by Mary.

Copies of the court documents and advertisement were obtained from Peggy Steele of California, a Bryant researcher.   Ms. Steele is a descendant of Elisha's second family.

Mary lived on long after Elisha died.  She was still living in Floyd County, Virginia in 1900, according to the census for that year.  She was living next to her daughter Nancy Reynolds and her family.  The census record states that Mary and her parents were born in North Carolina; that Mary was a widow.  Her birth is given as January, 1826, her age as 74.  She was the mother of 13 children, 6 of whom were living at the time.

The census information for Mary's daughter, Nancy Reynolds, states that she was born in Tennessee.

                             **************

In 1840, when Elisha was living in Rockingham County, North Carolina, there was also a man named Coleman Bryant, of about the same age living nearby.  In 1860, a 55 year old Coleman Bryant was living in Pittsylvania County, Virginia with 32 year old Elizabeth (wife, daughter & #00063;), a six year old boy named Fleming B., and a four year old boy named Thomas R.

Note: One source gives Elisha's middle name as Daniel.

1787 Census of VA, Henry CO Tax List B, p667 Apr 21, 1787, taxes collected from Elias Bryant

It seems most likely that Elisha Bryant belongs in this family grouping, perhaps descended from Josiah Bryant married to Lydia & #00063;  It seems to be impossible at this time to determine who Elisha's parents might have been.  My own speculation (no proof whatsoever) is that he may have been the son of Thomas Bryant (July 13, 1780-ca. 1840, husband of Ruth) by a first marriage.  This would make Elisha the half-brother of Thomas Dean Bryant (August 7, 1816-April 1894) who married Nancy A. Taylor, the sister of John Anderson Taylor.  Elisha's son Madison Daniel Bryant married the Paulina Jane Taylor, daughter of John Anderson Taylor.   If this were the case, Thomas Dean Bryant's nephew would have married the niece of Thomas Dean Bryant's wife.

Nancy Carolyn Smith, born Abt. 1802 in North Carolina; died Bet. 1880 - 1900 in Probably Stokes County, North Carolina. She was the daughter of 58. Daniel Smith and 59. Mary Edwards. Notes for Elisha D. Bryant: In 1850,Elisha Bryant was living with his wife Nancy and their children in Rockingham County, North Carolina. ************** In 1840, when Elisha was living in Rockingham County, North Carolina, there was also a man named Coleman Bryant, of about the same age living nearby. In 1860, a 55 year old Coleman Bryant was living in Pittsylvania County, Virginia with 32 year old Elizabeth (wife, daughter?), a six year old boy named Fleming B., and a four year old boy named Thomas R. In 1880, this widowed Coleman Bryant was still in Pittsylvania County, Virginia with his daughter Harriett, 19; son Thomas, 23; and Thomas's wife, Belle, 23. Note: One source gives Elisha's middle name as Daniel. __________________________ Notes for Bryants in Floyd and surrounding counties in Virginia: Ambrose and William Bryant are listed in the 1748 tax lists of Lunenburg County, VA. A man named Thomas Pitman was listed nearby. Charlotte County, Virginia, Josiah Bryant, orphan, chose Joseph Reynolds as guardian. October 6, 1794. July 4, 1796, Joseph Reynolds dismissed as guardian, because Josiah is of full age. [My note: Elisha Bryant's daughter Nancy D. married Alonzo D. It seems to be impossible at this time to determine who Elisha's parents might have been.
Notes for Nancy Carolyn Smith:  At the time of the 1860 cemsus, Nancy Smith Bryant was living in Danbury, Stokes Co., NC (g. 282 of Stokes County census for 1860). With her were son James Coleman, Age 26; daughter Susan, age 22; son Columbus, age 21; son John, age 16, and daughter Polly, (Mary), age 14.  Her husband, Elisha Bryant was in Virginia at this time with his "new" wife and family.  The 1870 census of Stokes Co., NC, Quaker Gap Township lists Nancy, son James, daughter Susan, and a 10 year old boy named William.  Nancy Bryant is listed with son J. C. Bryant in Quaker Gap, Stokes CO., NC on the 1889 census on June 22, 1880.
Children of Elisah Bryant and Nancy Smith are:

i.    Calvin Bryant, born abt 1831 in Rockingham Co., NC; died Oct. 30, 1875.

ii.    James Coleman  Bryant, born abt, 1834; died aft 1880 in probably Stokes Co., NC

Notes for Columbus Andrew Bryant: Columbus enlisted in the Confederate Army 18 March, 1862. He was subsequently assigned to A Company, 45th North Carolina Infantry Regiment. Records indicate that he was a 22 year old farmer from Rockingham County at the time of his enlistment. He was wounded October 19, 1864 during the battle of Cedar Creek, VA. His regiment, the 45th NC, fought in most of the important battles of the Civil War including Malvern Hill, Gettysburg, Wilderness, and Cold Harbor. Columbus survived the war, living to the age of 79.

Good morning, Larry!
I, too, have spent a lot of time trying to learn who the parents of Elisha Bryant might have been, but no real luck. He was my gggrandfather and I suppose, the black sheep of the family. When I first started researching him, I supposed that he had died between 1850 and 1860, as he was no longer with his wife Nancy and their children. Imagine my surprise when I learned that he had left his first family and started a new family with Mary A. ______. [I have seen Mary's maiden name listed as Sutphin, but I do not know the accuracy or origin of this information].
Census information lists Elisha with middle initial D. more than once, so I suppose that this is accurate. I have some vague idea that his father might have been named Thomas (with no proof at all). I believe that he was related to Thomas Dean Bryant 91780-abt 1840) who married Nancy A. Taylor, sister of John Anderson Taylor. I believe this because Elisha's son Madison DANIEL Bryant married Paulina Jane Taylor, daughter of John Anderson Taylor. All in the family, you see.
All my notes for Elisha Bryant are on Ancestry.com. I don't know if that is where you saw my information, but it is my most complete. If you don't have access to that, I will be glad to send you what I have. Not much, and quite a bit of speculation regarding Elisha's ancestors. If you have any information, hints, speculations, or vague ideas, I would like to hear them. Maybe we could come up with something that way.

Subject: Genealogy
I did a search for a name and came up with your site, I am not familiar with computers very much and get confused by them. I have been doing genealogy over 30 years and have headed up the National Hiatt/Hiett/Hyatt family Association for many years and put together a pretty massive genealogy on these and associated families, along with my direct and collateral lineages.
The name I was first searching for was Elisha Bryant, married to Nancy Smith, secondly to a Mary A. This connects to other lines of Taylor and down the line, Hiatt, etc. As I tried to follow what I can as far as I can understand these pages, there are several names of common interest and possibly links. All my lines were early, most all before the Rev. War, except on that came over from Ireland in 1820, other then that, some from Jamestown, Mayflower, MA Bay Colonies, Huguenots, Drunkards or Primitive Baptists, Quakers, early Presbyterian, etc. Along those lines I see some common names that would be fun to compare too, as Taylor, Beasley, Smith, Wilson, Wright, etc. My data base is near 400K, do not take from Internet, either direct input or from direct persons that have communicated and shared their personal family records with me. I do note on Elisha Bryant that you have many of the notes that I have in my records, but did add some notes that duplicated, to my records under him as well, would be good to complete the records of your families connections as well. BUT my big interest is to find others on this line who may be interested or have information on the parentage of Elisha Bryant. I have him as Elisha Thomas Bryant with some claiming Daniel but have no direct verification as to which. Would be interested in following connections to this Elisha of either family as well as any other collateral or connected families and marriages.
I am happy to share, and regularly share my records viz DVD, I have several books retyped of interest to genealogy that we follow as well as volumes of work on the Hiatt and related families. I have major connections to the Taylor lines of various branches, my own direct goes thru Robert Taylor who came over with William Penn in 1688, back to the 1400's Great Budsworth Church, England. Thru my Penn Dutch or Primitive Baptists I do have also Beasley and other conencted surnames to my families of Teeter (Deitrich); Poe (Pohl), Moore (Mohr), Burger (Snowburger) etc. many from Wortenburg Germany, abt 1715, brought over mainly by William Penn, to save from murderous persecutions by the Lutherans of Germany at the time. Etc. would be interested to hear from you too, and if you have any connections to persons who could help on the Bryant lines, would be eager to hear from anyone. Sincerely, Larry Anderson
