Michel RICHARD

MICHEL RICHARD

The first person with the name of RICHARD who came to Acadie was MICHEL RICHARD, who was called SANSOUSY, (meaning without worry), even though worries marked the frame of his existance.  One is not sure of the exact place of his origin, but probably it was Saintonge.  Many registers were irriplaceably lost in the burning of the Acadien villages by the English.

MICHEL RICHARD was born about 1630 and arrived in 1654, a little before the military took Port Royal.  The inhabitants of the surrounding country were under the influence of the Bostonnais.  He married in Port Royal about 1656 to a young girl of 12 years old, MADELEINE BLANCHARD, daughter of JOHN BLANCHARD and of RADAGONDE LAMBERT, one of the most ancient families of Acadie.

They had 10 children, of which the eldest, RENE RICHARD, he who was called BEAUPRE, was born in 1657 and is the direct ancestor of this genealogy.

In 1670, the English returned l'Acadie to France.  In the census of 1671, the oldest son, RENE RICHARD, is already 14 years old.  The same census states that MICHEL RICHARD is 41 years old and has become one of the wealthy inhabitants of Port Royal, by the number of the silver sterling he said he had,  (14 lbs.), and by the number of animals which filled his stables.  (15 cows & 14 sheep).

RENE RICHARD married in 1680, MADELEINE LANDRY, daughter of RENE LANDRY, the eldest and PERRINE BOURG.  7 children were born to this union and one of those of which we write about is their son, RENE II RICHARD, born in 1688, married MARGUERITE TERRIOT, daughter of CLAUDE TERRIOT and M. LOUISE GAUTROT, in 1712 at Port Royal.

In the fourth generation of this family, a girl JUDITH RICHARD was born in 1724.  Married in 1747 to JEAN-BAPTISTE LEPRINCE, son of JEAN LePRINCE and JEANNE BLANCHARD.

Then, in 1679, the youngest, MADELEINE BLANCHARD, died before she was 14 years old.  After a widowhood of 3 years, MICHEL RICHARD married in 1683, a second time, to JEANNE BABIN, a young girl of 15 years old, who's parents were his neighbors.

Our ancestor, MICHEL RICHARD, died in 1687.  Then, JEANNE BABIN, his widow, married in 1689 to LAURENT DOUCET, son of GERMAIN DOUCET and MARIE LANDRY.
