From an email, 4 April 2004:
Hello, I saw your posts on GENFORUM and am writing to share information & to make an inquiry.I recently received a copy of the 21 Jul 1854 Warren Co., IA antislavery petition, w/ at least one HIATT signature.
The petition (housed at NARA - Washington DC) presented to the 33rd Congress by Mr. (Chase, presumably Salmon P. Chase) reads:
Petition of Warren Co., Iowa, praying that slavery may be abolished in the District of Columbia, that it's extension into new territories may be prevented, that the coastwise slave trade may be prohibited and that the Fugitive Slave Law may be repealed.
The petition was ordered to lie on the table (i.e., to be ignored).
"Elcanah Hiatt" signed his name, as did several of his Lee relatives -- his father in law, John Lee; his uncle, Ephraim Lee, and his uncle, Charles Hinshaw.
I noticed that you referenced a book and am wondering if there are other references to the HIATT families' anti slavery activities. I am a Lee descendant and working on a book about their abolisionism and Underground Railroad participation. I am willing to exchange more information, thank you.
