_MDCL d. 6:15 P.M. 2 Aug 1908. He had gangrene on his foot for 90 days, caused by cutting his toenails too short. Informant: Milton Shelly (son)
It was stated in the Fretz Family History that Jonas was baptized on 3 Jun 1839......
Jonas was living in Jefferson Co., NE. by 1885 State Census. He and Susan
were Methodists.Jonas and Susan had 7 children. Three died of diphtheria as small children. Henry had it, too, but not as severe and survived. Years later, a little daughter, Mary, died of a throat hemorage. Susan had been cleaning feather pillows and thought Mary must have got one lodged in her throat. (Info. from Nellie Shelly and Sarah Lucier.) Milton Shelly lost his right arm in an accident when he was very young.
Jonas died in Jansen, Nebraska, at the age of 72, with sarrile gangrene, on Aug. 2, 1908. (Jonas had a hangnail on his toe, that he tried to cut off by himself and got gangrene in it.) He was buried on Aug. 3, 1908, at the Harbine Cemetery, near his wife, Susan, who died 3 years, and 5 months before he did. There is no stone to be found for him. He died without a will. (Intestate).
His granddaughter, Sarah, visited the cemetery at Harbine and took pictures. She says many graves are unmarked, around Susan's grave. She's sure more of the family are interred there, but they have no markers.
Jonas was 72 years, 1 mo., 30 days of age.
(Jonas's birthdate was listed as 1839, on Ziegenhain Gene., WFT #10, Pedigree # 1444)Jonas and Susan were mentioned in the Funk Family History, by A.J. Fretz.
I received copies of the 3 generation Family Group Sheets # 439637 that were sent to the LDS Archives, on Sept. 1966,( while I lived in Harper, OR. in 1967) by Leo Bringhurst, Toquerville, UT. We had driven through there several times. We phoned, once and talked to his sister, Emma. He had been deceased for some time. Too Bad! This is a good lesson in putting things off.

Information on the Shelly Family
By: Harry H. Smith, of Box 146, Jansen, Nebraska 68377
In a letter sent to Donna, 12-20-66I received your letter of the 12th. Have done quite a lot of checking on the things you wanted to know about. I finally found the certificate of a marriage record, at Fairbury, of Henry Shelly. I am enclosing same for you. I paid the charges for making out the paper. I, also, went to the cemetery at Harbine, Neb. and found the lot no. of same. Also, the stone tombstone with the inscription on:
Susan, wife of Jonas Shelly
Died March 7, 1905
65 yrs 11 mo 25 daysAlso, a foot marker with the letters "S.S." on it. Also, on the monument, the inscription, "She's not dead, just sleeping".
Just a few lines in regards to the monument. It has tipped over and is laying on the ground. There never was a good base under the stone. Time and weather has loosened it up and it cracked away and let the stone fall over.
I've done a quite a lot of checking up with some of the older folks in regard to the Shelly Family. They seem to have come here from Pennsylvania about the year of 1890. As near as I can find out, Jonas was a traveling man, or as they used to call them, "a runner" for a Tobacco Co. He finally came to Nebraska and went on a farm 5 miles south of Plymouth, Neb. It was new country. They broke the land and started to farm.
Milton & Henry stayed with them for awhile. Henry finally went to DeWitt, Neb., and worked at the Rock Island (coal chutes). The trains all used to burn coal. Finally went from there to Fairbury, where he finally got to be fireman on the Rock Island Railroad. Later on, he was advanced to engineer on the Rock Island Railroad. From there on, there does not seem to be any record of him, as far as I know.
As for Milton and his father, they moved from the farm to a house near Jansen, Neb., that they rented. Milton went to work for Jefferson County, on the road grader. Was on this for quite some time. Later got on with the State of Nebraska road maintenance for several years, between Fairbury and Jansen State Highway.
During this time, his father, Jonas Shelly, passed away and was buried at Harbine Cemetery, near his wife, Susan. Later on, Milton passed away and was also buried at Harbine Cemetery, on the same lot.
One thing I will have to tell you, as regards to Jonas Shelly. He always talked about being Pennsylvania Dutch. He always wore a long beard, halfway down his chest. And, also, insisted on having pie for dinner every day. Said he just had to have it.
Henry was real heavy-set. About 5 ft 8 in tall. Around 180 lbs. Sandy hair. Milton was about the same weight and height, with quite a dark complexion. Always wore a mustache.
I went fishing with them many times. My father owned a farm joining their's, with real good places to fish on it. No buildings on this place.
As to where Henry is buried, I have not found anyone who knows just where. Some think he went to the State of Washington.
Harry H, Smith
Donna's P.S.
Harry Smith replaced the base to Susan's monument and never charged us for it. What a wonderful man! He has since passed away.
Jonas was listed on FTW CD's # 8, 10, 14, & 15. Census Selected Counties # 318

Susanna was buried on 10 Mar 1905 at Harbine, NE. 65 yrs. 11 mo.s and 25 days old. She has a gravestone on one side of the cemetery, with no one else around her. Other's of her family are buried there, but no other stones were found. The base of her stone had been repaired, after the stone had crumbled, many years ago. The man who repaired it, said the old base had an inscription; " She is not dead, just sleeping" Her death record lists her as Mrs. J. Shelly, showing the same birth & death dates. Their was no informant and her mother was put down as Sarah Delb(?). Sarah Delp was Jonas's 1st wife, who died, 4 months after they were married. Susanna's Dr. was different than the one that Jonas had. Her mother was Elizabeth Kline.A.J. Fretz wrote that Susan F. Fretz was married to a farmer in Jefferson Co., Nebraska and they were Methodists. He listed all of their children, including our ancestor, Henry Shelly, born 26 Apr 1874. Rev. Abraham James Fretz also wrote other books, including The Funk Family that we are mentioned in.
Henry's daughter, Sarah, told us that Charles, John and Elmer (Susanna & Jonas's oldest children) died of Typhoid Fever as babies. Henry had it after he was born, but it wasn't as severe and he recovered. He talked about his little sister, Mary's, who died when Henry was 5 yrs. old. They called it a throat hemorage, but wasn't sure. Susanna had been cleaning pillows and everyone thought Mary had gotten a feather down her throat. She was only 16 months old.
Susan died at 65 years, 11 mo., 25 days of age, and is buried at Harbine Cemetery. Sarah used to spend some time with her Grandma Susan and really loved her. She remembered the last time she saw her, before Henry drove his family West over the Rocky Mts. Sarah was only 7 years old.
Leo Bringhurst, of Toquerville, UT., updated the Shelly Group Sheets, and sent them to SLC, UT. He was 6th cousin to Jonas.
(Ziegenhain Gene. says that Susan died Mar. 7, 1905. (Could this have been the burial date?) Her Death Record says Mar. 5, 1905.

_MDCL Milton d. of a stroke. Informant: H.E. Ziegenhain
Milton lost his right arm in an accident when he was very young. He was a batchelor and never married. He was a worker for the State of Nebraska Road Maintenance. He lived for 50 years in the Jansen community. Sarah remembers that he used to drive a County road grader, on the roads.
(Ziegenhain Gene. says that Milton died at Fairbury, Jefferson, Nebraska?)
_MDCL Informant: Mrs. Nellie Shelly of Selah, WA. (wife)
Henry was living in Jefferson Co. when the State Census was taken in 1885. Henry died at the age of 60 Years, 9 mo., 2 days. at St. Elizabeth's Hospital in Yakima, Washington. He was buried 27 Jan. 1935, in the Terrace Heights Cem. at Yakima, Washington. He had heard that some hospitals would give a person a shot to speed their death. He told his family that he didn't want to be "slipped the black needle, or he'd die."He was a retired R.R. Engineer. When his Union told them to strike, he gathered up his family and came to Washington State. As far as we know, it was never settled.
Henry was a bigot, true blue. The whole family knew it. He even belonged to the K.K.K. at one time. But, when he realized that they had turned against the Jew's, too ( and he had Jewish bloodlines!), he was afraid for his family and left Kansas.
Henry bought a new Model T Touring car and loaded his family into it, after the salesman told him how to start it. We laughingly say that he had a 1\2 hour of driving lessons, before he drove West, over the Rocky Mts.!?
Grandma Shelly said that he would turn the steering wheel in the direction that he was looking. He'd look over the view, high on the mountain, and say "Look, Nellie!" She'd panic as the car headed in the direction off the road. "HENRY!!!", she'd yell, and grab the steering wheel. Sarah says she'll never know how they made the trip, alive.
He loved to chew tobacco. Whenever he'd spit out the window, it would be blown back in through the back window on Sarah or Irene. They'd complain about it stinging their eyes. He only quit chewing when he went to the hospital, but went right back to it, when he got home. It was responsible for his death, at the end of his life.

Nellie said that Little Susie was a "Blue Baby", who died of complications of the heart. She said Susie looked like a skinned rabbit. She only lived 19 days.Irene looked like her father's side of the family, whereas the other surviving daughters and son, Harry, resembled Nellie. Nellie looked like her mother, who in turn had her father's features. Nellie had brown eyes and Henry had blue ones.
Nellie was quite a seamstress. She sewed her own wedding dress, and sewed for her children. Her mother, Susan Davis Martin, was also an excellent seamstress. She could make tiny, even stitches in the blink of an eye.
Nellie lived to the age of 78 years, 6 mo., 29 days, and died on 7 July 1968, of Arterioserosis. She was buried at Terrace Heights Memorial Park on 10 July 1968.

_MDCL Susie was a "Blue Baby" and died at 3 weeks of age. Informant: Henry Shelly (father)
Nellie told us that Susie looked like a skinned rabbit. Her circulation was very poor, causing her to have a blue tinge. She was born with heart problems and only lived for 18 days. It's so sad to have your child die in infancy. Sarah was 2 years old at the time.
