Biographical SketchRay Gardner Tipton was born In Irvine, Kentucky, Febuary 20, 1896, son of William Pearl and Nancy Jane (Shouse)Tipton. His early education was received in the Public Schools of Etill County, Kentucky, after which he attended the Estill Collegiate Instute, Irvine, Kentucky,
April 21, 1917 was married to Miss Dixie Webb. To this union have been born five children. The Tipton's reside at 122 Grand Avenue, Irvine, Kentucky. On Oct. 1 1916 he was employed by the Louisville and Nashville Railroad Compamy as ticket clerk which position he holds at this time. He is a member and Steward of the Irvine Methodist Episcopal Church South. His great grandfather William H. Tipton, the son of Major Jonathan Tipton, of Virginia, North Carolina and Tennessee, came to this county in 1806.
In the fraternal world: received the Fellowship Craft degree Sep. 14, 1917, and raised to the Sublime degree of a Master Mason, Oct16 1917. He was elected Master of Irvine Lodge No. 137, F. & A. M., Dec 27 1919, and elected Secretary Dec. 27, 1920. which postion he now holds.
He served as Grand Senior Deacon of the Grand Lodge of Kentucky in 1929, having been appointed to that position by Grand Master, Frank D. Rash.
On March 20, 1920, he was exalted to the August degree of a Royal Arch Mason in Richmond Chapter to become a member and the first high priest of Irvine Chapter No. 42 which had been defunct since 1858 and re-established under dispensation by Grand High Priest A. Gordon Sulser, January 7, 1924.
At the Annual convention of the Grand Chapter of Kentucky held in Louisville, on Oct 16, 1928, he was elected Grand Master of the Second Vail; and each year was regularly advanced until at the Conocation held October 20, 1936, he was elevated to the Office of Grand High Priest.
On March 13, 1924, he was made a Royal and Select Master in Richmond Council No. 71, and recevied the Super Excellent degree in Washington Council No.1, Lexington, Kentucky in March 1926. In 1925 he demitted from Richmond Council No.71 to become a charter member and Secretary of Irvine Council No. 92.
Brother Tipton Recevied the Scottish Rite Degrees in Indra Consistory, Covington, Kentucky, Havin g been a member of the fall class of 1923.
Biographical Sketches are so often given to extravgant praise, that we prefer to limit our comments to those dictated by simple truth regarding the life and character of the subject of this sketch.
In every social, business and fratenal cohtact, Brother Tipton Displays the Qualities of a man. Prudent and frugal, modest and industrious, he made most of the limited opportunities of early youth. His quarter-century service in a responsible position with one employer is a sufficient testimony of his high conception of business life.
In his church life Brother Tipton "Attends upon its ordinance and supports its institution".
There are few members of the Masic Fraternity who have so consistently devoted their time and energies to the welfare of the Order. As his acquaintaince extended through the years among the Mason of Kentucky, he was marked for recognition and promtion; Brother Tipton's readiness to discharge any duties, however humble placed evident in any organized society. He discharges with the same meticlous care the Secretarial duties of his home lodge as he does his duties of the Grand Lodge and Grand Chapter.
Refined and tactful, hewins men to him and advances the interest of every instution; fraternal, social or religious, with which he is identified.
Brother Tipton is one of the best known Mason in Kentucky, and we fell confident that the Grand Chapter of Kentucky and Masonry generally will be promoted during his term as Grand High Priest.Signed
