*** Leah Hiatt (b. Abt. 1819, d. March 13, 1855)
Leah Hiatt (daughter of John Hiatt and Margaret Nichols  was born Abt. 1819 in Wayne Co., Indiana, and died March 13, 1855 in Highland Co., Ohio. She married Robert K. Barr  on January 17, 1833 in Wayne Co., Indiana, son of John Barr and Austin Notes for Leah Hiatt: Leah Hiatt was born in North Carolina of English ancestry. She married Robert K. Barr, a son of John Barr by a first marriage to __?__Austin, and stepson of her mother, Margaret (Nickols) (Hiatt) Barr. He was born in Pennslyvania. They were married in Wayne Co. Ind. and had three children. (1) John Hiatt Barr (my great grandfather. wfs.) (2) Jezreel Decatur Barr (a) John Barr died at age 21 (b) Opal Barr ( Mother's "cousin Opal"wfs) (3) Louisa Jane died at five of scarlet fever shortly after her father's death of cholera in 1844 (? 1847) while he was on a business trip to Pittsburg. Leah moved from Wayne Co. to Penn Twp., Jay Co. Ind. in 1949 where she taught a subscription school and took in sewing. As soon as they were old enough, the boys went to work with Jezreel living with an uncle in Jay Co. She was remarried to a Joseph Lupton on Nov 10, 1851.  The Luptons had been very prominent and wealthy members of the region around Pennville, Indiana. A first child of that marriage died in infancy, and the marriage ended in divorce after a second child, Margaret or Abigail Margaret Lupton, was born. That child was kept by the father, and was raised by her half sister, Rachel Lupton. Leah died in Highland Co., Indiana soon after the divorce. She had apparently gone there to be with her mother Margaret (Nickols) (Hiatt) (Barr) Stafford. More About Leah Hiatt and Robert K. Barr: Marriage: January 17, 1833, Wayne Co., Indiana. Children of Leah Hiatt and Robert K. Barr are:
+John Hiatt Barr, b. March 06, 1839, Wayne Co., Indiana, d. October 10, 1907, Old SoldiersHome, Dayton, Ohio.

*** John Hiatt Barr (b. March 06, 1839, d. October 10, 1907)

John Hiatt Barr (son of Robert K. Barr and Leah Hiatt  was born March 06, 1839 in Wayne Co., Indiana, and died October 10, 1907 in Old SoldiersHome, Dayton, Ohio. He married Calista Samira Fields  on March 01, 1866 in Jay Co., Indiana, daughter of Jonathan Fields  and Eliza Brandt Notes for John Hiatt Barr: J. H. Barr was born March 6, 1839 in Wayne Co, Ind. His mother moved the family to Penn Twp. of Jay Co. Ind. in 1949, five years after the death of her husband, Robert K. Barr, and shortly after that she married Joseph Lupton. There were two children born to that marriage, the first of which died in infancy. Shortly after the birth of the second child, the marriage ended in divorce and the wife died a little after the divorce. John Hiatt had to take care of himself from an early age after the death of his mother and at fifteen years of age he went to learn the harness maker's trade from Thomas E. Borden. A year later he went to Clarke County, Iowa where he farmed for a year and then returned to Pennville to work for his uncle, Eli Downs for two years. From there he went to Highland Co., Ohio possibly to live with his grandmother, Margaret (Nickols), (Hiat), (Barr), Stafford. Upon the outbreak of the Civil War, he enlisted in the first call for volunteers and served for three months in the First Highland Reserves raised by Governor Trumbull. After that he enlisted in the Twelfth Ohio Cavalry for three years. His first battle was at Mt. Sterling Kentucky and his regiment was engaged in guerrilla fighting in Kentucky.  He was involved in a three day battle at Saltville, West Virginia, and was wounded in the hand and head suffering a concussion as he went to the top of the enemy fortifications. He fell fifteen feet over the side of the embankment, crushing his chest across his gun. After that he lost consciousness for two hours, and was left for dead; but he later managed to crawl to a cabin which was used as a hospital, again lost consciousness, and when he awoke found that he had been taken prisoner and transfered to an enemy hospital. He was unconscious for a week and in a precarious condition for another twelve days after which he was taken to Lynchburg and from there to Libby prison for three months and twenty-one days, until a general exchange of 10,000 on each side was made. He was not included among those to be exchanged since he was considered too ill to move, but another man allowed him to answer to his call, and he was returned to his own lines. After recovery, he returned to his command and served until the close of the war. He was honorably discharged at Nashville, Nov 24, 1865, returned to Pennville, and took up farming till ill health forced him to retire. His health had been so damaged by the war experiences that he was never again able to do ordinary labor, so he became involved in trading stock and then became a dealer in general merchandise. He had married Calista Samira Field on March 31, 1866. My family records state that he became a chair maker in the vicinity of the Shakers of Indiana. Perhaps that was only a sideline, but my sister, Ruth Stephenson, has a cane-bottom and cane-back rocking chair that he made for his wife. The little rocking chair that I rebuilt for my mother, (Dale Stephenson now has it), and of which I made a copy for each of my children's families was patterned in general after the Shaker designs of that region, but had ornamentation that the Shakers would probably not have used. However, I did find a picture of an almost exact duplicate in a book of Shaker designs. That chair was made for his little daughter, Margaret Lavina (Barr) Vore. After the death of his wife in1866 he seemed incapable of continuing his family responsibilities and the younger members of the family were raised by my grandmother Lavina Margaret Barr. In 1890 he wrote the following poem.
                                                                                      If I Should Die Tonight
If I should die tonight; My friends would look upon my quiet face Before they laid it in its resting place And deem that death had left it almost fair And laying snow white flowers against my hair Would smooth it down with tearful tenderness And fold my hands with lingering caress; Poor hands so empty and so cold tonight. My friends would call to mind with loving thought Some gentle words the frozen lips had said, Errands on which the willing feet had sped. The memory of my selfishness and pride, My hasty words would all be laid aside. And so I should be loved and mourned tonight: Oh friends I pray tonight Keep not your kisses from my cold dead brow. The way is lonely, let me feel them now. Think gently of me. I am travel worn. My faltering feet are bruised with many a thorn. Forgive, O hearts estranged, forgive I plead Where dreamless rest is mine I will not need The tenderness for which I long tonight.
Written by J.H. Barr when 51 yrs, 1mo, & 20da. of age at Boehmer, Hunnington Co. Ind. He died, apparently of "dropsy" on Oct.12, 1907 at the old Soldiers Home, Dayton, Ohio having been there just about one month, and was buried at Penville, Ind. Oct. 15, 1907. Four of the six children were present at the funeral. Mary and Corda who were living in Nebraska were not present. In an index of marriages for Jay county in the time frame of 1880 to 1905 I found many Barr marriages listed along with the marriage of Calista Field to John Hiatt Barr. I do not know the possible relationships, but the name Barr is not common in most marriage lists. Jacob Barr and Nancy (Coats) Barr were guests at my grandmother Lavina Margaret (Barr) Vore's wedding. Coats is common in Quaker geneologies. The fact that Margaret (Nichols) (Hiatt) Barr was a Quaker and that the Coats Name is associated with the Early Quakers would suggest that this branch of the Barrs was probably originally Quaker also although I have not been able to associate them with the Quakers in Indiana. This listing is included only for the use of anyone who might wish to follow the matter further. It may be that the Barr family could be trace back further through Quaker Records. The name does appear in some of the old Quaker records, but I have so far found no specific connection to our original John Barr.
