He played semi-professional base ball. He pitched for Wheeling, West Virginia in the old "Tri-State League" for a season or so. One of his teachers was Denton Tecumseh (Cy) Young. Cy was from Gilmore Holmes County, Ohio, William wife's home town. Willim was young and "cy" took him in hand and worked with him, as he did with many local boys.
