At this time, William's place as a child of Benjamin and Nancy is just speculation. There does appear to be several coincidences to place him here. First, there is a Butler listed in the 1850 census living with Benjamin and Nancy. He was 15 years old. Living close by was Sarah Rogers who was 11. Their ages would seem to match for the 1880 census. Although William is not listed as Butler's first name, in the 1880 census a William B. was listed. Butler was a name commonly used in the Tipton family trees.
Second, there are several names that appear in both William and Sarah's families that may suggest a relationship between William B., Benjamin and Nancy.The one piece of the puzzle that doesn't fit is the fact that Benjamin doesn't list Butler in his will. Was there a falling out? Did Butler die and therefore this William B. belongs somewhere else? More research is needed to sort out this mystery.
