John enlisted and served in the Spanish-American War, receving a part of his training at Chicamauga, Georgia near Chattanooga. When the World War broke out he served his country by going over with the United States Army and after  the Armistice he remained the three years of occupation. He is now Recorder of the masonic lodge of Illinois making his headquarters in Springfield, Illinois.
