   They were buried in the Old Hiett graveyeard on Sandy Ridge, now owned by John Whitacre.   Courthouse death records.  She died at age 71, near North River Mills, Hampshire Co., Va.

In 1942 Galen Hiett Swimley wrote to Dorothy C. Bockmier: “Samuel L. Hiett, of Springfield, III., a grandson of Samuel, Mary Hiett Gard’s brother, says as follows: ‘First child of (John Hiatt’s). second marriage, James, born Apr. 25, 1751, d. August, 1823. Married Lucrecia Milliar (also given ‘Millar’). at close of war service, 1783. (she born Nov. 14, 1763.)

“Five girls and five boys. My grandfather, Samuel, being the 9th child, m. Mary Morrison. Had 3 girls and 2 boys, my father, Timothy A. Hitt, being the 4th child. (You give Austin as of these.)

“My grandfather, Samuel, was a bridge contractor, and worked on the Parkersburg and Covington bridges over the Tenn. R.” (R2, 80).


James Hiett GARD

b. 2 June 1827/8, Washington Co., Ohio; d. 8 August 1865; m. 2 December 1852, to RUTH GAGE PALMER. He fought in the Civil War, was mustered out in June 1865, and returned home, where he died two months later.
