From a letter that was written to Mr. & Mrs. David Hiatt who lived at 925 E. Sioux Ave., Pierre, S.D. dated Dec. 1967. It was written in response to an article which was put into the Cappers Weekly concerning the Delicious Apple Tree. There was another letter dated Oct. 21, 1966.
First letter herein, in pocession of Gladys Larsen of Undrewood Apts.,
Omaha, Neb. who is 84 years old as of Oct. 1992. (She was still living in a nursing home in Omaha as far as I heard, year 2000.)Benjamin Brown and family lived in Redfield, Iowa, close to Peru.
Mrs. David Hiatt Tilden, Neb.
Pierre, S. Dak Oct. 1966
Dear Friend:After reading your letter in the Cappers Weekly I must say this is a small world. You don't know me and I don't know you but maybe we can get acquainted.
My mothers name was Mary Emma Brown Peirce and her mother, my Grandmother
was Mary Ann Hiatt Brown. She had one sister, Evaline Hallingworth
(Hollingworth) and brothers Elam, Sylvanus and Stephen. Half brothers were
Arthur and Leslie, one half sister, Melanice, we called her Lanta. Lanta
married B. H. Baker and lived at Tilden. Them and their children are all gone.
Clem was the last one to go a little over a year now. I had three sisters, Nora, Maud and Ella. They are all gone and these relatives are hard for me to remember as I was the youngest. I have two girls. My husband passed on nearly 5 years ago. Oldest girl lives on our home farm 2 miles west of Tilden. Other girl lives in Omaha.
Uncle Stephen, Grandma Browns brother used to stop at Tilden once or twice a year. We were always glad to see him come. I write to Mae Keller of
Kirksville, Mo. She is a granddaughter of Cordelia Brown Lee. Aunt Delia as
we called her, was my mothers half sister.
I don't know what relation uncle Stephen Hiatt has left. They would be
grandchildren. His son died this spring but could not go to funeral. I don't know what more I can tell you but would like to hear from you.
We have had a nice fall. Had a spell of winter a week ago and sounds like we can look for cold again. Just hope we don't have a long hard winter.
I live alone and will be 70 years old the 2nd of Dec.
Hoping to hear from you
Sincerely Mrs. Beula Whitever2nd Letter December 1967
Keep thinking I would write you again but some things are so easy to put
off. Now it is the Christmas Season so I'll get down to it.
Dec. 2nd I had a birthday, 71 years getting to the years we don't like to see the years roll by. Went to a birthday party Sunday, 3 old ladies there 90 years so if I do as good as they are I have several years yet. My mother
died in her 50 ties and the oldest sister Nora before that. We were four
sisters and I am the only one left. I wish my sister Ella just older than I
were living for she was a good hand at tracing down relations. My grandmother was Mary Ann Hiatt and married Benjamin Brown. They lived Redfield, Iowa close to Peru where some of the other Hiatts lived. I was there when a little girl and again several years now. If you were related to Jessie Hiatt the originator of the Delicious Apple we could say we are related for I believe Jessie was a brother or cousin of my grandmother. I wrote several years to Mae Keller of Kirksville, Mo. Last Christmas I did not hear. She was very well posted on the Hiatts. Her mother was my mothers half sister. Grandpa Brown married twice. Well the past is past and I sometimes say, "Why worry about it" but its nice to know. My husband has been dead for nearly 7 years. His father was early settler here from Switzerland. We had lots of relations here at one time but has changed. I live alone in my home. Have one daughter on farm 2 miles from town. Her husband is in wheel chair from Multiple Sclerocus. She is geting pretty well worn out from caring for him. They have one daughter in Lincoln (NE) and 2 grandchildren. My other daughter lives in Omaha. We hope to be together for Christmas but that depends on the weather.
I expect you have been pretty cold up there for it was cold here. We had a very unusual summer, rained all thru June. Fields and every place was
flooded. Took out lots of bridges and roads. July was hot unbearable hot.
Crops were late and corn didn't dry out as it should. Lots of people pick &
shell in the field but it had to be dried if it was kept. Elevators were full and they started dumping on the ground.
I hope you have a Merry Christmas
Beulah Whitwer
