Notes for Milton Franklin Banfield:
In the 1930's Milton changed his name to Walter Franklin Brumfield. Grandma (Lillian) use to jokingly talk about their bootlegging days. It was during the depression and prohibition, and money was scarce. Evidently the law was wise to his illegal distribution of home made spirits, so he changed his name and went on with life. I remember my mother telling me a story about him changing his name, and going back to work at the same place of employment. The law came in looking for him, and his employers told them "There is no Milton Banfield working here"! And there wasn't a Milton Banfield there! He obtained a Social Security Card under the Brumfield name, as did grandma(Lillian), and they both worked as a Machine Operators at Ownes Illinois Glass in Huntington WV under the assumed names, and went about their business with the law never finding him. He was admitted to the Athens Ohio State Mental Hospital in 1948. He spent 26 years, 10 months, and 14 days in the Athens Hospital due to a non genetic blood disorder which caused a neurological disease, which in turn had permanently damaged his brain. He was released January 10, 1975 to a brother by the name of Charles Brumfield of Huntington WV. However, there was no brother by the name of Charles Brumfield, and no brother by the last name of Brumfield, but he did have a brother by the name of Charles Banfield. I do not really know who took him out of the Athens hospital, nor did his family. According to Gloria Banfield, Jack Banfield's wife, the family looked for Milton for many years. She tried unsuccessfully to help her husband Jack (Milton's brother) find him . If his brother Charles had taken him out, surely the family would have known? Gloria continues to live in Shady Springs, WV,and I have talked to her many times about Milton. Within a few years of his release he was re-admitted as a patient at the Edgewood Manor Nursing Homes near Lucasville Ohio. Probably due to the fact that Athens State Hospital was in the process of closing it's facility. Edgewater Nursing Homes had two homes, Lakeview and Riverview. Milton lived at Riverview and passed away at Pike County Hospital, around, Lucasville Ohio in July of 1978. At that time he was still using the name Walter Brumfield. No relatives were known to exist for family contacts. He was buried in an unmarked grave in a Rual cemetery named Remby Cemetery in Pike County Ohio, right outside of Lucasville. This information was given to me by Mr. William McKinley, owner of McKinley Funeral Home in Lucasville. Milton was taken there for burial upon his death. The funeral home donated their services and a casket and the state arranged for a spot at the cemetery. Mr. McKinley remembered him and telephoned me after I had sent letters to several funeral homes in the area. I also spoke to a long time hospital administrator at Riverview Hospital which Mr. McKinley referred me to.
