Jonathan TIPTON Sr.

    Jonathan was a farmer.

In 1820 census he was married and living in Coshocton Co. OH, (Oxford Twp) next door to Jacob Reed, probably his father-in-law.  In 1830 census he was in Tuscarwas co. Oh (Salem Twp).  In 1840 census he was in Holmes Co, OH.  In 1850, he and most of his family were in Sullivan Co. MO.

Sullivan County, MO Deaths 1875-1877

These death records are not complete for the county, but do constitute the death records as they appeared in the Sullivan Standard and the Milan Republican. Often the dates given were vague, as "last week", "a few days ago", "sometime back", "recently" etc. If the exact date was not given, but a remark as "last Tuesday", "Sunday back", and similar expressions used, the date of the newspaper and a perpetual calendar were used to try to ascertain the exact date. The wording concerning these deaths is as it appears in the news item.

Sept. 10,1875. Jonathan Tipton Sr. died at his residence 6 miles southwest of this place (Milan) one day last week.

Jonathan TIPTON

EVEN Civil War.

    If the father of a family was called to service and had a son old enough to go to war, he could go instead of the father. Hiram, the father was called and Jonathan "John" , the son wanted to go in his father's instead. the family thought they had Jonathan talked out of going, but when he went to the field to work, he could hear the roaring of the Cannons and it made him more anxious to go, so he went to the house and told his mother he was going and did. Three legs of the horse he was riding were shot off, so he ask the Captain what he should do now. The Captian told him to strap the saddle on his back and fall in line. this he did and shot 15 rounds. He was not killed in the battle, but took sick and died on a straw pile. His Father started after his body, but when he had gone so far, the people told him he had better go back home the "Bushwackers" would be sure to kill him, Jonathan was later buried.

Jonathon may have been wounded in the Civil War.  He enlisted in 1st reg't cav M.S.M. Jan. 4th 1862 at Milan, MO.  Mustered in 2/17/1862 at Milan Mo., Co C Captain Jackson.  Remarks say Discharged April 10, 1862 by Civil Authorities.
