John Wesley Tipton, son of Amon Tipton, Attorney at Lew, Minden, Kearney County, Nebraska; a native of Westminster, Maryland, was born October 11, 1829, of early American stock, whocame first to Maryland. His Father, Amon, lived always in his native state, dying ther in 1863; buried in the city of Baltimore. His mother survived her husband and died in 1875 at the home of her son John Wesley Tipton.
John Wesley was reared in his native state, getting what eduction he received from attendance at an old school house near his old homeplace. He became a blacksmith apprentice. he came west in 1849; Boone County, Indiana and in 1851 married Miss Betsy Ann Hickson of Northfield, Indiana. She was the daughter of Wesley and Marquette Hickson. He lost his first wife in 1856 leaving her three children: Melissa, Edward and Anna she is the wife of Frank Vance of Jasper County, Illinois. He married his second wife sarah A. Person on Oct 12 1858 She died Nov 14 1859. they were later devoiced. He married again in 1860 to Miss Almire Caldwell of Kokomo, Indiana.
Judge Tipton came to Nebraska in 1880 and settled in Kearney County. Taking a homestead at that date, he began farming and so engageded for some years. Having read law in Indiana and been so admitted to the bar, he moved into Minden after he had "proved up" on his homestead and had entered upon the profession. He retained his farming interests. He build up a large practice in his profession. He was a hard worker. He was postmaster at Northfield, Indiana.
