Captain Willaim  Brown Tipton , who had in the army under General Winfield Scott, on his march to Mexico, returned to Mt. Sterling, Kentucky, where he heard of the discovery of gold in California and jointed the  "Gold Rush", going to Placerville " Hangtown", California. He took took with him," Uncle Charley",  and old negro servent of the family, who did the cooking for him "Uncle Charley" saved his money and returned home first, where he told of the fabulous wealth to be had in the gold fields of California. Captain William also fought in the "Battle of Tippecanoe."
