Death of the Honorable James S. Tipton
Honorable James S. Tipton, after a brief illness, died at his home in Hillsville, on the 19th Oct. 1879. He was born in the County of Carroll, February 18, 1829, was united in marriage to Catherine Sutherland , Daughter of John L. and Elizabeth Sutherland... Judge Tipton studied law under William H. Coo, dec'd an eminent lawyer of Southwestern virginia, and was admitted to the bar in July, 1856. In the year 1860 he was elected Commonwealth's attorney for Carroll county, which office he held until the year 1868, when he received the appointment of Judge of the 15th Judical district of Virginia.... Judge Tipton was very remarkable man. His knowledge of his profession in all its branches was of the most thorought and complete character. As was said by Gerneral Walker, Judge Tipton's knowledge of decided cases and special pleading was perhaps the most complete of any lawyer in the State. His powers of memory were a sticking peculiarity... he died with the Harness on... On Saturday evening as the last lingering sunbeams sadly faded away from the summits of his own native hills, calmly and peacefully he passed away to that land where Law in unmarred by human imperfections and errors, but where justice and mercy are as boundles and unlimited as the attributes of Infinite Wisdom and Goodness... As an advocate Judge Tipton was faithful, diligent and successful in a remarkable degree.... At one time, his name was brought into prominent notice for congressional honrs as the candidate of the Conservative party in his district, but he never pressed his claims... in the knowledge of the history of our county and that of England, it would be hard to find his equal.
