OCCU Farmer, Stonemason

Until the Civl War he was a farmer and stonemason and lived  at Tipton Hill. He volunteered for Home Guard, made up of older men (he was Forty-Two) and young boys. The Guard remained in Yancy County to protect people from raiders and pillagers. He is thought to have been a member of Captain Peak's Company. He was captured along with his brother Jonathan Tipton  in the spring of 1864 in a skirmish with a raiding party sent out by Union Colonel George W. Kirk, who was robbing the farm of Timothy Miller om Brummitt Creek. They were marched to Knoxville, where Kirk's army was station at that time. Jonathan is buried in the U.S. National Cemetery in Knoxville, Tennessee. David apparently refused to "volunteer" and disappeared and his grave has never been located.
