He was a soldier of the Mexican War and Civil War, according to "Early Settlers of Sangamonand County, Illinois". By his first wife  he had five children  and after her death he married Rosanna McCauley and they  had six children. After serving in the Mexican War  he moved to Missouri.  When the Civil War broke out he was  made Captain of a Company in a Union Regiment, was captureed at the Battle of Pittsburg Landing, exchanged after seven months imprisonment and returned home.
    He served a term in the State Legislature of Missouri , 1863, then again went into the army and was killed at the Battle of Frankland, Tennessee in December while acting as Captain of the Company.

They moved from Tennessee to Sangamon County, Illinois and raised a family of ten children. The book, Early Settlers in Sangamon, Illinois page 272 states that all of this family are in Missouri or Iowa.
