They owned a large and beautiful estate in Hawkins County, Tennessee . They were prosperous and noted for their hospititly. In their home was always gathered a circle of relatives and friends.
Mrs. Hord established a beautiful custom in the year 1896. For thirty-one consecutive years she held a community picnic in her yard. These social gatherring were largely attened; many states were usualy represented.

John was reared on a farm near Elizabethton, Tennessee; enlisted at Strawberry Plains, Tennessee in August 1863 as a Private of Captain L. C. Carter's Company "H" 16th Regiment Tennessee Voluntary, Colonel John K. Miller commanding; promoted to Corporal of Company "H" and in March 1864 was made 1st Lieutenant of company "H" 4th Tennessee Inf. mustered into service, 7 May 1864 at London Tennessee. He took part in many battles and was honorably discharged at Nashville, Tennessee, 2 August 1885 at close of the war.He first enlisted in 1861 in Eastern Tennessee in Company "B" under James I. R. Boyd of 1st Tennessee Inf. and while on his way to Kentucky before muster, was captured at Powell's Valley. He escaped and was in the mountains recruiting men when he was captured again, but with the help of one of his old neighbors, escraped again.
