He seved as a friend and peace-maker during the trying war years when the county was torn by bitter family divison during the Cilvil War. His home was a refuge and hospital for the sick and wound of both sides. Both he and his wife are buried in a small family plot over looking his beloved Elizabethton.
Albert was the Sheriff of Carter County, Tennessee, from 1848 to 1854. He reprezented Carter and Johnson County's in in the State Legislature, 1855-1869-1870. Was appointed Superintent of Public Instruction of State of Tennessee. He was a Lawyer and farmer.
