Thomas attend school until he was 14. He obtained an education in such schools as time and place afforded, He went to Chillicothe, Ohio  when he was ten years of age, together with this family. The qualification for a teacher at that time were stated in the certificate, "Stating that the person herein named was qualified to teach spelling, reading and writing and ciphering, excluding fractions." At fourteen, Thomas could spell most of the words in Webster's Spelling Book and write his name.
Mr. and Mrs. Tipton began their married life in Franklin County, where they purchased from time to
time ,1,000 acres of land and brought it under cultivation. To build up a home of this sort from such a forest, with poverty on one hand , distance to market on the other, and malaria everywhere, give some idea of Captain Tipton and his wife's enery and determination, There farm was known as Pleasant Ridge Farm.
Records from the Adjutant general's office, Washington D.  C. say; " Thomas Tipton served as a private in Capt. James Campbell's Battallion, Ohio Militia , War of 1812.  His sevices commened October 20, 1812 and ended April 20, 1813. the records also show that Thomas Tipton served from July 26, 1813 to August 26, 1813 as aprivate in Capt. John Radcliffe's Company of Mounted Volunteers, Renick's Mounted Regiment, Ohio Militia. The "Roster of Ohio Soldiers in War 1812 page 53, gives his names" Also, Williams Brothers History of Pickaway and Franklin Counties. His name appears as "Thomas M. Tipton" ( his signature) in an old court paper.
