The birthdates for this family do NOT agree with the dates published byNellie Pickens Anderson in her book THE JOHN PICKENS FAMILY. The datesthat are listed for this family were taken from the census material forTennessee in 1860. Mrs. Anderson had Nancy's birthday as 1852. Thisdate does not correspond with the census material. I believe that thedate or 2 AUG 1852 is really the birthdate of Alexander and notNancy's. jcp1996pg168 et al"There is a record aat the Blount County Court House in the Register'soffice as quote, 'Benjamin J. Pickens, Alexander Pickens, Nancy J.Householder, James H. Pickens, M.J. Householder and Samuel Pickens ofKnox County, Tennessee executor and lawful attorney for us for theestate of Mary Pickens.' The date was Feb. 12, 1883."" The property was sold at auction June 28, 1887. The purchaser wasR.A. Sharp, a neighbor. The price was 1760. There were 160 acres (moreor less) and the farm is mentioned as the Frank Lanter farm. He wasprobably the earliest or a very early owner of the farm."

pg 167-168, THE JOHN PICKENS FAMILY, by Nellie Pickens Anderson, pb1950, ed. Elizabeth Shue, 1985:"William Pickens married Mary (Polly) Tipton about 1850. She was bornabout 1833 {b. 1829}, died Dec. 17, 1881, at her home in the 11thDistrict of Blount County and is buried at Mount Olive Church Yard inKnox County. She was the daughter of Benjamin and Nancy Brooks Tiptonwho lived in Sevier County, about two miles from Trundles Cross Rodadsor about two miles from Whalen's mill and near Post Oak Church, andback toward the mountains from Knob Creek, where they owned much land.""This information was give to me by Benton Pickens, son of William, inan interview not long before his death."" Aunt Polly Tipton Pickens was left, as many others, with a heavy loadtocarry at the close of the Civil War. There were six children betwweenthe ages of six and fifteen years. The exact date as to when the familycame to Blount County to live is unknown. Cousin Benton told me theywere raised in the 11the district home that was theirs in later years, but I am certain which much search and study that the children gottheir start in Sevier County. Several tax receipts show payment softaxes in the 11th district of Blount County between the years of1870-1880. I don't know the date of the first purchase of property hereby the first tax receipt on hand was for the year 1870. Samll notes arefound for the years 1876-1787. One of them was a mechanics lien oftwenty-four dollars for work to be done on the homestead, and was datedJuly 12, 1876. nancy Tipton, J.C. Ellis and Samuel Cusick were names towhom other notes for very small amounts were made."" In those days, friends and relaives were the bankers. A man's wordwas his bond and reputable persons borrowewd at will as was necessary. The small amounts of money needed then in comparison with the demandsof ouir deflated dollar is of startling interest. A receipt was givento Mary Pickens from Dr. R.W. Goddard for six dollars and was datedJan. 17, 1863. This, of course, was during the Civil War period.Another Receipt was given to Mrs. Mary Pickens from Rockford Mfg. Co.Jan. 29, 1874.""Mrs. Haynes, an old resident here and sister of Mrs. James Pickens, deceased, of Oregon, said she was sure William Pickens didn ot live inBlount County. She said Mrs. Pickens and family first lived in a biglog house and that she is sure they built the large frame house nearbyand which is still standing. It is of the ell type and is of firmconstruction. The place is on Roddy's Branch, near Rockford, Tenn."" I found a record of purchase on Sept. 1, 1879 of at least a largepart of the Mary Tipton Pickens place. Aunt Polly bought it from H.M.Wilson(administrator of the estate of R.I. Wilson, deceased) of KnoxCounty, Tennessee. Fifteen hundred dollars cash was paid for it and itwas bounded in part by Andrew Porter and ADdison Hall."" On this farm Mary Pickens completed the rearing of her children andat this home in which she had lived for several years, she died. Notmuch is known of her life except that she had to be courageous, frugal, enterprising and a good manager to come through the difficulties ofrearing her family. The home was a Christian one and the memebers ofthe family were Baptist."
