Harmon Harris Tipton, forth child of William and Caterine Harris Tipton was born at Irvine, Estill County, Kentucky, December 12, 1842, and passed away, Sepember 24, 1927, at his home in Lakin Kansas.

    On May 21, 1865, he was married to Elizabeth banfield at Sharpsburg, Kentucky, where they resided until 1868. When they moved to Bates County, Kentucky. In October 1895. they moved to Wichita County, Kansas. Coming to Lakin in April 1895. Nine Children survive this union; Mrs. G. F. Johnson of Lakin, Joe Tipton of Lakin, Harmon Harris Tipton Jr. of Hollywood, California, John Tipton of Leads, Missouri, Author Lloyd Tipton of Lyons, Kansas, Mead Woodson Tipton of Lakin and Campbell G. Tipton of Hutchinson; 36 grandchildren 4 great grandchildren.

    He became a member of the Church of Christ at West Point, Missouri; in 1882, and a charter member of the Lakin Church and a faithful elder of the flock. He represented the people of Kearny County in the State Legislature one term. Brother Tipton was ever ready to repond to a call that would aid in the work of Christ's Kingdom and in the Bible School his prayers for the young people and the Lord's Table among many good and appropriste thing in his prayers was that if he had done anything wrong or said anything to hurt anyone fellinf that he be forgiven in the name of Jesus Christ. He was a lawful Obedient, worthy citizen and a church leader and will be greatly missed in the church and community.

    Harmon was a Blacksmith and some of his sons became a Blacksmith. Harmon built the Commerical Hotel in 1907 in Lakin, Kansas. He was a Democrate and State Representive for Kearney County in 1903 to 1905.

   Whitney  Hord Tipton's book " The Tipton Family " list a child my the name of Thomas Tipton , but their are no family records of this child. by Paul A. Tipton great-grandson of Harmond Harris Tipton

   In the Book: We Tipton and Our Kin by; Rev. Ervin Charles Tipton  he has a Thomas Tipton listed as a child of Harmon Harris Tipton, on page 965 he states the following: In Hord's book there seems to be two here, but they may be the same person .(Thomas seems to have been the nick name for Harmon)

Harmon and Elizabeth came to Kearney County in 3-5-1894


Elizabeth BANFIELD

Elizabeth (Banfield) Tipton was born near Sharpsburg, Bath County, Kentucky, May 16th 1843; was married to Harmon Harris Tipton, May 2nd 1865, moved to Bates County, Missouri 1869, where she resided until moving to Wichita County, Kansas, in October 1885, where she resided until her death, November 20th, 1922 age 79 years, 6 months.

    To this union twelve children were born, three of them predeed her in death. She was a member of the Christisn Church and was ever faithful in her Christian work, and regular attendance at worship until prevented by sickness.

    Funneral services were held at the home on Railroad Avenue, Tuesday afternoon, November 21st, conducted by Rev. McKeever, and her remains were followed to Lakin cemetery, by a large concourse of relatives and friends for their last long sleep.

    The bereaved husband and children have the heart felt sympathy of the entire community in the loss of a devote wife and loving mother, in this their hour of deep sorrow.


Mary TIPTON

Miss Mary Tipton was born in Sharpsburg, Kentucky; March 6, 1866, the daughter of Harmon and Elizabeth Tipton, and died in Garden City, Kansas, April 27, 1949.

    Mary Tipton was the first lady stenographer in the state of Kansas. She was a member of the Christain Church for more than sixty years and was ever faithful in her Christian work until prevented by illness. Leaves to morn her passing, one sister, six brothers, many other relatives and a host of friends.

Mary did much research on the Tiptons and   W. Hord Tipton states in his Book WE TIPTON AND OUR KIN  that she has been of considerable help in furnishing information for his book.

In Ervin Chalres Tipton's Book "WE TIPTON AND OUR KIN" He has her born 16 aug 1879 but looking at the family bible of Author Lloyd Tipton she is list between Claude and harmond Harris Jr. With a date of 16 Aug with on year but if she was born between these two brothers she would have been born 1870 I think it is a typeo in Ervin C. Tipton book a 9 instead of and 0
