Jonathan Tipton was the son of Col. John Tipton who signed the original constitution of Tennessee.

At one time, North Carolina reached the Mississippi River. It now stops at the Allegheny Mountains. Several families moved across the mountains in the 1770's and formed the Watagua Association which was the first government west of the mountains. North Carolina did not want to support them and in 1784 they formed the State of Franklin which existed until 1788. John Tipton and Edmund Williams were officials for North Carolina and were opposed to the state of Franklin.

The first governor of Tennessee was John Sevier who was their mortal enemy. There was a battle on Tipton's property which adjoined the Williams property in Johnson City, Tennessee. The Tipton home is a Tennessee historical living history site today. Milligan College is on part of the Williams property. All histories of Tennessee include this historic site. The Tiptons were all prominent Tennesseeans and were descendants of Edmund Williams and Lucretia Adams.

The Tennessee Bible records say that Lucretia was related to John Adams but the Massachusetts Historical Society does not agree with this statement. (Ref. Bob Cannon-descendant)

John was a Colonel in the War of 1812, was a Colonel of Light Horse Regiment of East Tennessee Counties in 1822, represented 5 counties in the Tennessee House and Senate from 1807-1829, and was the surveyor-general of the Ocoee District, Tennessee.
