Obituary - Elmer Peterson

"Onetime Hibbing legislator dies
"Elmer Peterson, a former DFL lawmaker who served in the Minnesota Legislature for 23 years, died Sunday at his home in Hibbing. He was 73.

"Mr. Peterson was elected to the state House of Representatives in 1940 and served there until 1946. He then won the Senate seat vacated when John A. Blatnik was elected to Congress.  Mr. Peterson served in the Senate until 1963, representing the 60th District. He also was an electrician at the Hibbing High School.

"Surviving are two sons, Donald, Arlington, Va., and Warren, St.Louis, and three grandchildren.

"Services will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday in Our Savior's Lutheran Church, Hibbing, with burial in Maple Hill Cemetery. Visitations will be from 6 to 9 p.m. today at the Daniels Funeral Home."

"Carl "Harold" Jensen
"Marquette - Carl "Harold" Jensen, 91, of 617 Mountain St., died at home Thursday morning, May 8, 1997.

"Born December 20, 1905, in Marquette to Hilda and Otto Jensen, he attended Froebel High School and was a veteran of World War II. He married Millicent Peterson in 1949 and was a member of Messiah Lutheran Church.

"His work paralleled the history of Marquette.  He worked for the Queen City Dairy and Ice Company and later became a craftsman and carpenter for Loma Farms. He assisted his father in building the original Northwoods Supper Club. After the war he worked as a heavy equipment operator for the city of Marquette, becoming foreman of the Public Works Department prior to his retirement in 1971. Since his retirement Harold had a passion for travelling the world. He had an awe and appreciation of nature. In his late 80's he began building his own log cabin in Big Bay, which was featured in the Marquette Monthly.

"He is survived by his daughter, Ruth (Patrick) Murphy of Marquette, his son, James (Ginger) Jensen of Kalamazoo, three granddaughters, Alisha and Shanna Murphy and Sarah Jensen and several nieces and nephews.

"Funeral services will be held Saturday, May 10, 1997 at 11:00 a.m. at Messiah Lutheran Church with Rev. Peter Voorhees officiating. Burial will be in Park Cemetery. Friends may call at the Swanson-Lundquist Funeral Home from 6 to 9 p.m. this evening. Pallbearers will be nephews Larry, Tom and Dan Peterson and George, Bruce and Dan Collins. Memorials can be made to Messiah Lutheran Church."

"Millicent Jensen
"Marquette - Millicent "Millie" L. Jensen, 72, of 617 Mountain St.Marquette, died Thursday following a brief illness.

"Born Sept. 17, 1919, in Negaunee to Edward and Anna Peterson, she was a 1937 graduate of Negaunee High School. She worked for the Negaunee Public Library and as a stenographer and bookkeeper for the city of Negaunee.

"She married Harold Jensen in 1949, moving to Marquette that same year and going to work for Messiah Lutheran Church. Mrs. Jensen later worked for the Marquette Area Public Schools for 22½ years, working the last 16 years as secretary for the superintendent of schools.

"Mrs. Jensen also gave piano lessons and was the organist for various churches in the area.  She was a member of Messiah Lutheran Church, the Marquette-Alger Retired School Personnel and the Danish Sisterhood of America.

"Surviving are her husband, Harold, a daughter, Mrs. Patrick (Ruth) Murphy of Marquette; a son, James of Kalamazoo; a sister, Mrs. Jay (Ruth) Brady of Negaunee, a brother, Edward Peterson of Negaunee; threegranddaughters; and several nieces and nephews.

"Services will be at 2 p.m. Sunday at Messiah Lutheran Church with theRev. Peter Vorhes and the Rev. Mark Kukkonen officiating.  Burial will beat the Park Cemetery. Visitation will be from 4 to 9 p.m. Saturday at the Swanson Lundquist Funeral Home in Marquette. Pallbearers will be nephews Larry, Tom and Dan Peterson and George, Bruce and Dan Collins."
